Tina picked up some waterproof fabric off-cuts a while ago and popped in this week to show us what she’d made - waterproof handlebar covers.

Our patterns are set up to ensure minimal waste. When there are gaps between pattern pieces we try to add additional, smaller items such as wind mittens, beanies, headbands and off-cut hats. We keep aside any pieces like this we can’t use which anyone is welcome to pick up. We are always delighted to see the multitude of creative projects that result. Thanks Tina for sharing yours.

To fulfil our criteria for warm pants, the fabrics we choose must provide instant warmth, dry quickly, and prevent any moisture build up during sustained physical activity. Further, the fabric structure, durability and thermal properties must be maintained during washing and wear. We have three options:

Micropants
Italian-made, Tecnopile Micro Fleece - 150g/sqm
A popular choice for lounging at home, or in a hut. They have even been spotted at the odd cocktail party!

- Brushed soft surfaces provide immediate warmth
- Dense knit structure offers light wind resistance
- High durability with no pilling, scuffing or loss of shape

Fleece Pants
USA-made, Polartec® 100, 195g/sqm
The extra thickness means more warmth for cold evenings in a hut or at home.

- Retains structure, durability and thermal performance through sustained use
- Thicker fleece provides more warmth than Micropants
- Lower wind resistance than Micropants due to a more open brushed construction

Mercury Leggings
USA -made, Polartec® Power Stretch®
Our most widely used thermal pant. A close fitting legging, enjoyed by a broad age range (15-92 years) and from Pilates workouts to the mountain tops.

- Nylon outer surface: abrasion resistant, durable and non-pilling
- A smooth knit outer will not grip to other brushed layers worn over it
- Lycra® content provides an uninhibited four-way stretch
- Brushed polyester inner surface maximises warmth and comfort

10% off these three pants from now to 22nd of June.

Josh came in to buy a new Stealth top when we had our Nelson pop-up. He mentioned his trusty favourite had been a casualty of a climbing accident in Arthur's Pass. Jane suggested he should bring it in and a repair might be possible. Our garment surgeon got to work and though a little ‘patchy’ it is now back in working order. And, after a helicopter trip and some repairs and rehab, so is Josh.

If you have Earth Sea Sky garments you'd like to have repaired, let us know.

For 20 years Russell Ferens has been the heart of Rotoiti Lodge Outdoor Education Centre. He has led the outdoor education programme to support an estimated 45,000 students to experience Nelson Lakes. He recently closed this chapter.

With all his family gathering at the Lodge for his last day, he took the opportunity to have them bring their Zeal Guide jackets. Wonderful colour and smiles! Thank-you Russell, we've loved working with you and being a small part of your work through providing performance NZ made garments. We wish both you and the Lodge all the very best for their respective next chapters.

While working at Wanaka Waste Busters three years ago, Zoe found this sweater at the bottom of the box. She claimed it quickly, recognising the brand and quality. Further it had an even more special meaning: her late father John managed the Bivouac Queen Street store back when this Polarlite Sweater was part of our range. We were delighted to have her visit and share her story.

We refer to Earth Sea Sky as a fabrics company. Quality fabrics are more expensive but they outlast any cheaper options maximising value and sustainability. Zoes’ sweater, still looking good, still keeping her warm, and over 30 years old is a great illustration. Thanks Zoe.

Twenty years is a long time to remember a pair of trousers.

Bas arrived in New Zealand in the early 2000s and bought a pair of Earth Sea Sky Prolite pants from Colls Sportsworld in Greymouth. They became his favourites, the kind you wear constantly, the kind that just work.

Then came an accident. The pants were cut off and gone.

Two decades later, Bas and his wife Amelia, both bakers back in the Netherlands decided to return to New Zealand. Their first stop? Earth Sea Sky for some new gear.

We got to spend time with two people who understand what it means to make something people love and rely on. Bas makes sourdough. Amelia makes pastries. They closed their bakery for three months for this trip. Their loyal customers understand why, despite having to live without their favourite baking.

We showed them our workshop, they left with a full wardrobe, and we made sure they knew every local artisan baker.

It was a fun morning and we are proud to have someone wanting to wear our pants for over 20 years.

Safe travels, Bas and Amelia. We look forward to your next visit or, better still, to checking your bakery out in person.

Nathan (right) from Melbourne stopped into our Bernard St store last week just back from a South Island hunting trip with a mate.

A former bricklayer with a serious passion for hunting and quality kit, Nathan's is an enthusiastic wearer of Earth Sea Sky. Pictured here in his Alpha Hoodie (elco green, naturally), his wardrobe includes Taslan longs, Japara cap, Trekker socks, Merino Boxers and a whole bunch more. A system that fits the many environments he finds himself in.

When Nathan met Cliff (left) our cutter, here in Christchurch and also a keen hunter, the conversation immediately went where it needed to go: trip stories and favourite hunting spots.

Thanks for stopping by, Nathan and for supporting our New Zealand made commitment.
