Shona Rubery Designs

Shona Rubery Designs Custom Design and Dressmaking Shona Rubery Designs offers personal dressmaking to the discerning client.

Using our design and/or dressmaking skills we solve our clients' wardrobe issues, be it bridal, special occasion, business or just unique everyday-wear. During consultation with our client, we offer advice on appropriate styles, fabrics and colours and also offer a design service if they require it. Clients provide their chosen fabrics, and sometimes a commercial pattern too, though more often we

draft a pattern specifically for them. Consultations and fittings are all held within the intimacy of our tastefully decorated bungalow studio, away from the hustle and bustle of the CBD. Clients leave with the feeling that they have been treated like guests in our own home, and with the certainty that they will be getting the quality garment they envisage.

Here’s a feel-good story.
A long-time client of mine brought in a coat from the late fifties/early sixties, which had belonged to her late, much adored mother. It had clearly been very elegant once, but was looking a bit worse for wear and had many moth holes in it. She wanted to save something of it for nostalgia’s sake. So she asked me to make four scarves; one for her and for each of her three sisters, as a memento of their mother. How lovely is that?
(Sorry about the colour discrepancies in the photos; same fabric but different lighting)

Very happy with the way this silk shirt has turned out, especially considering how difficult the fabric was to work with! It clung statically to the work surface, making cutting it out (straight) extremely challenging, fusing interfacing and keeping the stripes straight equally challenging, and making sure the left mirrored the right just as tricky. But taking time to do it right has paid off. Fingers crossed my client loves it as much as I do!

Not for the faint-hearted: pulling apart someone’s precious wedding gown, so that I can re-size it to fit her perfectly 🥰. Layers and layers of fabric, tulle and beading. A methodical and careful approach required 🫣

Over the years I was there, my studio garden has received many compliments from clients. All the credit (and a massive thank you) go to my gardener Nick Thomson (aka Dad), who has totally refused payment, instead volunteering his time and energy to keep the garden looking ship-shape. Thank you so much Dad, and now you can enjoy a well-earned rest!
