ProjectPlay

ProjectPlay NZ’s most trusted sensory play sets, developed by an Early Childhood Professional. Safe, plastic-free, and designed to spark curiosity and creativity.

ProjectPlay is a kiwi owned and operated family business in sunny Hawke's Bay. I, alongside my husband (Chief Graphic Design), and our son (Chief Product tester), aim to bring you quality, open ended loose parts and resources for children ages 0-6. We do all the hard work and scour our neighborhood and the globe, for resources that inspire and ignite the imagination. We value real, authentic play

experiences for children. We are inspired by Montessori, Rudolph Steiner and Pikler philosophies while also supporting the theory of loose parts. We hope you share our passion and journey, in ensuring our future tamariki grow up having real “toys” to play, potter and tinker with. The term heuristic play was coined by Elinor Goldschmied (1910-2009). Heuristic play is about supporting curiosity, wonder, imagination and free exploration. The open ended, everyday objects, allow children to select, explore, manipulate and compare items with each other. During this type of exploration play, the child is engaged in their own learning journey and building their own opinions about what the object can or can't do. Loose parts are materials that can be moved, carried, combined, redesigned, lined up, and taken apart and put back together in multiple ways. They are materials with no specific set of directions that can be used alone or combined with other materials. You'll find our loose parts collection offers many different objects, of all shapes, sizes and textures to excite and spark children's imagination and sensory learning. All objects are eco friendly and you won't find any plastic here! We pride ourselves on maintaining our stance on being plastic free. Our heuristic sets come in a cotton linen blend bag and wrapped in Geami WrapPak, which is naturally biodegradable, compostable, recyclable and made from sustainable forests. We then wrap in another layer of FSC certified & acid free tissue paper from and pop into an compostable courier bag derived from biopolymers and co-polymer; PBAT (polybutylene adipate terephthalate), Corn-starch and PLA (polylactic acid). All our items are checked thoroughly for safety before being sent out. We understand the importance of providing safe, play items for you little one. We ensure our products meets the safety requirements under the Product Safety Standards (Children's Toys) Regulations 2005 AS/NZS ISO 8124.1:2002. We clearly state on our website our safety policy and include information around safety and supervision with every order. Here's what our happy customers have to say about ProjectPlay

It’s taken me a long time to write this…and even now, I’m not sure I have the right words.

But I’ve decided to pause ProjectPlay for now.

This brand has been my whole heart. My nights, my weekends, my creative outlet, my passion. But lately, it’s been harder to keep all the plates spinning, physically, emotionally, logistically & financially. Business is tough right now.

So I’m giving myself permission to step back. To rest. To feel proud of what I’ve built. To hold space for what’s next, even if I don’t fully know what that is yet.

This isn’t goodbye forever. Just a pause to reflect and plan.

To everyone who has supported ProjectPlay, thank you. Truly. Your orders, messages, photos, encouragement, and love have meant more than I’ll ever be able to say.

With love always,
Angela 💛

You tidy. They dump.
You tidy again. They dump again.

Here’s the secret: it’s not chaos it’s learning.

When children tip, pour, and repeat, they’re exploring a play schema, the brain’s way of practicing cause & effect, sequencing, independence, and focus.

So next time it feels like a mess?
Remember, this is the foundation for maths, science, and problem-solving later on.

95% of your child’s brain is developed by age 5.

Let that sink in.
Not by age 18.
Not by the time they hit school.
FIVE.

And the biggest influences on that brain growth?
It’s not fancy toys, ABC apps, or high-tech gadgets.

It’s what they do with their hands every day:

Tipping. Banging. Scooping. Dropping.
Real-world, real-sensory, real play.

That’s why heuristic play matters so much in the early years.
It’s not just “cute.”
It’s not just “busy time.”

🧠 It builds focus, creativity, and confidence from the inside out.

From chaos to calm, this is the play shift our customers are loving.

When we swap overcomplicated toys for simple, open-ended resources, magic happens. Promise.

Children become calmer. They play for longer. They create their own stories instead of following the rules.

It’s not about more toys, it’s about the right toys. It's about being mindful about what our kids are playing with.

Our heuristic sets are designed by an Early Childhood Teacher (hi 👋) to spark imagination and build important life long skills, while keeping play screen free and simple.

This might look like a basket of random stuff…
But here’s what it’s actually doing for your child’s brain 👇

It starts like this:

You hand them a basket filled with spoons, rings, tins, and scarves.
They tip it out. They explore. It’s messy.
You wonder… are they even learning anything?

They grab the spoon. Grip it. Twist it. Bang it.
🧠 That’s fine motor development, hand strength, coordination.

They post a ring into a tin. Miss. Try again. Miss again.
🧠 That’s persistence, spatial awareness, problem solving.

They wrap a scarf around a doll.
A swaddle. A cape. A picnic blanket.
🧠 That’s imagination, storytelling, symbolic thinking.

No flashing lights. No batteries. No overstimulation.

Just real, rich, open-ended learning that grows with them.

✨ This is heuristic play.
Simple start. Rich reward.
