My friend Zoe and I have been loving felting - this felted set was our first project together. We wet felted carded fleece to create the body, then finished the edges with needle felted angora goat locks. Matariki is also wearing heels that I wet felted after knitting them. Our thick cable jumper and felted lock shoes. This jumper uses purposefully unevenly spun yarn, with bold cables creating texture. I played with different knitting techniques to build layers of texture, with small moments of colour dotted through. I knitted and wet felted the shoes in a ballerina shape and then needle felted angora locks that I dyed at home, over top.

Matariki is also holding one of Jason Nathan’s taonga, incredibly lucky to have his mahi featured with ours ❤️

Matariki wearing our Kiwi Knit Poncho and Flower Brooch.

The poncho is knitted directly from blue grey carded Corriedale wool, the soft, unspun fibre before it becomes yarn, keeping it close to its rawest form. This way of knitting with carded wool is something the wāhine in Wairoa use when making for local farmers. The Flower Brooch is hand spun and dyed with indigo.

Our collection, launched at New Zealand Fashion Week, is now available online.

Featured above is our Felted Coat. Made from fleece sourced in Nūhaka, the wool was wet felted together, then cut and sewn by Zoe Marler. Hand dyed locks and carded fleece were needle felted over the surface to create mangōpare and other motifs, before pieces were wet felted again to bring it all together and create this taonga.

- 18th August, The Cloud- New Zealand Indigenous Fashion Symposium - panel talk and workshop
- 20th August, Shed 10 - Kāhui Collective Runway Show
- 22nd August - New Zealand Designer Breakfast at The Shelter - panel talk with other designers from The Shelter by taylor

ĀHURU is showing at New Zealand Fashion Week! We are a part of Kāhui Collective - showing alongside some very talented indigenous designers from Aotearoa and the world. The kaupapa is led by the kuīni KIRI NATHAN and her team, so grateful to be part of it all. There is a lot planned for the week including a runway show on the 20th August at 6pm. I’m back on the dyeing buzz at the moment which reminded me I didn’t share about learning to dye with the whenua this past raumati/summer. Summer was great as a lot of the flowers had blossomed and I was able to walk out of the house and use what was in the garden or on the ground. I tested dyeing with Wharariki flowers, Harakeke flowers, kawakawa leaves, avos, onion skins, carrot stalks, and pōhutukawa flowers that had fallen from the tree. Most of my pieces in the new collection have bits of these homespun, home dyed yarn ❤️
