When you’re trying on wedding dresses, it’s easy to judge everything standing perfectly still in front of a mirror.

But, your wedding dress should survive you actually having a wedding in it.

You’re going to live in this thing for hours.

Sitting down. Eating the dessert. Raising a glass. Hugging everyone. Dancing. Possibly spilling something. Definitely getting the hem a little dirty.

So before you buy the gown- sit down in it. Walk around. Lift your arms. Take a big breath. Ask yourself whether you can eat dinner comfortably.

A wedding dress can look incredible AND let you enjoy your wedding.

Keep the statement buttons. Change the fabric. Make it longer. Make it softer. Adjust the shape. Take the original in a completely different direction.

That’s one of our favourite things about bespoke… an old Nemo design doesn’t necessarily have to stay in the archives.

Always fancied a princess moment? We have just the skirt for it. 👑

Meet Ruby, one of the statement skirts in our bridal hire collection.

She brings all the volume and movement of a ballgown, but because she’s a separate, you get to decide what happens on top. Go romantic with lace, keep things beautifully simple, add sleeves… make her feel like your version of bridal.

And if there were ever a setting made for a skirt like Ruby, we’d say standing on top of a snowy Queenstown mountain comes pretty close.

Our Violett High Top offers something a little different. Part of the Nemo Botanical Dye Collection, its softly dyed fabric brings colour into the bridal look without overpowering the gown itself.

Look a little closer and there’s plenty going on in the construction too. Panelled detailing creates shape through the body, layers of silk organza add structure to the skirt, and a low back with a soft drape gives Violett a beautiful finish from every angle.

One of the perks of having your gown made from scratch? There’s room to change your mind along the way.

When we create a bespoke wedding gown, we first make a toile, essentially a test version of your dress made in a simple fabric before we cut into the beautiful final stuff.

And it has a very important job.

Something can look wonderful in a sketch, but feel completely different once you see it on your own body. Maybe the neckline needs to come down. The waist wants to move. A sleeve suddenly doesn’t feel right. Or something you weren’t sure about turns out to be your favourite part.

The toile gives us the freedom to pin, tuck, reshape and refine the design with you. We can see how the proportions work on your body and make those decisions before moving on to your chosen fabric.

It’s definitely not the glamorous stage of having a wedding dress made (as you can see here 😆), but it might be one of the most valuable.

Because made-to-measure isn’t about getting everything perfect on the first try. It’s about having the time and space to get it right for you.

Then we get to make the real thing. ✂️🤍

That’s exactly what our made-to-measure service is for.

We design and make bespoke wedding gowns right here in our Queenstown workroom, starting with your ideas and working through fabrics, shape, fit and all those little details that make a dress feel like yours.

And you don’t need to arrive with a perfectly drawn design either. Bring us your saved photos, half-formed ideas, fabric loves, definite NOs… we can work through it together.

If off-the-rack keeps getting you almost there, perhaps it’s time to make the dress instead. ✂️🤍
