Building up to a busy few weeks. Just altered the hem of my daughter’s ball dress for tmw 😳. Had planned to do it a couple of weeks ago but ended up with urgent dance outfits to alter. My daughter is used to hers being put to the bottom of the list tho. Whilst she had faith in me I don’t like last minute alterations so finished this tonight.

Next up I have 3 hornpipe suits to make by mid July, will start them tmw, a lad coming round tmw to be measured up for his clan kilt - heavy weight, I do enjoy heavy weight tartan plus also a dance kilt to make.

Looking forward to the kilts, it’s been a few months so suffering withdrawal symptoms 🤣🤣🤣.

Lovely weekend spent at a dance competition in Waipawa in Central Hawkes Bay where I saw 5 Stag Stitches kilts in full swing, one aboyne skirt and plaid, and a hornpipe suit in action.

Meanwhile in Wellington 10 of my kilts were being worn by the Upper Hutt pipe band at the Relay for Life.

Just to keep me busy I measured up for 2 new hornpipe suits plus the one I already have to do, got a kilt order for a clan kilt and have a dance kilt to make.

Going to be a busy few weeks ❤️

And this is why I recommend having pleats tacked before getting kilts dry cleaned.

Pic one shows less red at the bottom of the pleat than top. Pic 2 I’ve drawn around a pleat to again show the difference between the top and bottom of the pleat. You’ll see the white stripe is in the centre of the pleat at the top but at the bottom it’s closer to the edge.

It’s been a while but lovely to have the weight of a kilt in my lap again.

This kilt alteration needs to be completed this weekend as is required for a wedding next weekend. I had hoped to make the aprons a little bigger however this kilt didn’t have a lot “extra” in the waistband. You can come up with a plan but until you actually get into the kilt and see how it’s made the plan is just an idea.

When I make kilts I always add a little extra to waistbands to future proof incase the kilt aprons need to be made bigger as of course if the width of the apron increases then the length of the waistband needs to be longer as well. However I didn’t have this option. I did manage to increase the under apron about an inch plus have moved the buckles over to the last pleat in an effort to make it a little bigger. New straps are a little longer too so that should help.

Just sewing in new lining (wider apron also means wider lining). Then tmw I will tack pleats and re steam them correctly to get them back pleating in the correct place.

It’s been a little quiet lately but today I’m doing some alterations on a kilt for a wedding in 2 weeks.

As many people seem to find, kilt waists seem to reduce over the years, requiring a little alteration to make them fit again. This kilt will have the aprons made a little bigger and buckles updated and moved over along with new straps which the client chose.

As you can see from the blue mark I’ve drawn down a kilt pleat, I am guessing this has been dry cleaned at some point and the dry cleaner hasn’t paid too much attention to the pleats so I will also retack the pleats and resteam them.

It is Mother’s Day here in New Zealand. My kids know I have a tartan addiction. A beautiful Fraser tartan backpack (I was a Fraser prior to marriage) and gorgeous Dress Lochnagar luggage tag and heart. This is the tartan of the kilt I wore for my dance exams and when I sat my Members Teachers exam. Both these tartans have a great deal of meaning to me.

Acknowledgement to “Wee Village Maid” for the backpack and “Re-Unique” for what I understand was a speedy turnaround time for the Lochnagar items. There are a few tartan craft stockists out there, and always good to give a shout out to them!

Happy Mother’s Day to those Mums out there.
