2nd LT Moana-nui-a-Kiwa Ngarimu, my great uncle. Part of the 28th Māori Battalion's C Company. Awarded the Victoria Cross for Valour- the highest military honour in NZ. KIA on 27 March, 1943 Tebaga Gap, Tunisia. His VC citation read that after taking and holding a key German position against many counterattacks, 'Ngarimu was killed on his feet defiantly facing the enemy with his tommy-gun at his hip’.
He was 24 years old.
The medal was posthumously awarded to his whānau in Ruatōria in 1943.
