DESIGNER TALK — Sunday 11am

Join James Dobson (Jimmy D), Nathan Taare (Of Body) and Julia Palm (JPALM) and Dr. Chelsea Nichols for a conversation exploring the realities of building creative businesses in Te Whanganui-a-Tara.

From navigating global supply chains at the edge of the Pacific to maintaining independent practices in an industry driven by speed and offshore production, we’ll discuss what it means to make things differently.

The discussion will touch on James’ recent business evolution, Nathan’s balance of film work alongside Of Body and his RNZ series Journey of Scent, and JPALM’s commitment to local manufacturing and a slower, more intentional approach to fashion.

We’ll also talk about the power of collaboration, community, and why spaces like SLUG continue to play an important role in supporting independent creative practice.

Part of COMMON MATERIAL at City Gallery Wellington.

Sunday, 11am.
Free entry.

COMMON MATERIAL has become one of the biggest opportunities and career highlights JPALM has ever had. Building something this ambitious alongside such an incredible group of creatives in Te Whanganui-a-Tara has felt very special and monumental.

What’s made this project so powerful is the spirit behind it - people championing each other, sharing knowledge, opening doors and building something collectively. We’re all very different businesses with different worlds and perspectives, and the exhibition, runway and talks invite people into those worlds through storytelling, process and conversation.

Huge love to from - the powerhouse holding us all together - alongside our incredible producer , who we’d truly be lost without, and Charlotte Davy from for backing the vision from the beginning and constantly pushing JPALM forward.

Working with on spatial design, and + on visual design, has been unreal. They’ve woven all of our very different visions together into something immersive and magnetic.

JPALM exists across many parts of COMMON MATERIAL - including a shoppable installation featuring some of our favourite Wellington brands, new limited edition denim pieces created with long time collaborator , and the first drop of the new TETHER collection launching at the runway show (and online Saturday6th 9am).

The exhibition is free and open to the public June 6-7th.

The JPalm runway is invite only due to strict capacity limits, but on the Sunday the runway film will be projected in the gallery for all to enjoy. There is also a free Designer Talk with James Dobson ( ), Nathan Taare (.nz ) and Dr Chelsea Nichols ( ) and I at 11am on Sunday 7th.

COMMON MATERIAL is a celebration of Wellington creativity, talent and community - not to be missed 🖤

JPalm is incredibly excited to be part of this new design exhibition .

Balancing everyday ease with tailored precision, TETHER continues the enduring language of JPalm.

The JPalm runway presentation will open the exhibition on Thursday night (invite only), with the exhibition remaining open to the public throughout the weekend.

JPalm will also present a shoppable installation featuring the new TETHER collection, alongside a free designer talk on Sunday 7th with our friends , .nz , and .

The last few weeks feel like a dream - it was so fun to be on the road and traveling from Whangārei all the way to Invercargill to see our wonderful JPalm stockists nationwide. It feels so exciting to get through another milestone in the process of making a new collection.

🤍 If I haven’t said it enough this week - support small local businesses whenever possible! We love our wholesale stockists so much + they are the best champions for NZ made & JPalm 🤍

Stepping into felt instantly calming and immersive - I was honestly blown away by the level of detail.

Ebb became JPALM’s base during our Dunedin work trip. Everything felt intentional without being overdone. Soft light moving through the interiors, layered textures, greenery softening the edges.

Even the scent… that subtle pepper & silk note as you enter - it really stayed with me. Ebb was the perfect bookend to our tour from Whangārei to Invercargill.

An inviting, contemporary, and luxe stay - and the ultimate backdrop for a small, unreleased glimpse of what’s next from JPALM too ✨
