Emily Mahoney

Show runs 5-27th June

Emily Mahoney is a recent graduate from Massey University, completing her Bachelor of Fine arts (with
Honours) in 2025. Emily’s practice explores abjection, body horror, and the human body’s capabilities.
Using latex, human hair, makeup, and molding and casting bones, Emily’s sculptures have uncanny
resemblances to the human body while simultaneously feeling alien and peculiar. Her works are strange and
uncomfortable, yet soft and inviting, provoking the audience to question if they should care for these creatures or reject them.

Hunters and Collectors presents NIGHT PHOTOS by Connor Ward as the second show of our 2026 exhibition run.

Please join us for the opening on May 8, 5-7pm. Exhibition runs from May 8-June 2.

Themes of horror vs. glamour permeate through this ongoing photographic series. Ward positions figures in awkward or derelict spaces as if discovering them within their natural environments. The initially menacing subject is compromised by the lens, the audience becoming the vo**ur through Ward’s spying camera. The flash exposes the nocturnal being and it is stunned in this instant, yet ready like prey. Instincts take over and the vo**ur is tempted through a display of the body. Whether viewed as beautiful or disgusting, the ethereal nature of the setting is amplified and the evanescent moment of terror lingers.

Ward acknowledges Ngāti Whātua among all local Iwi as tāngata whenua o te kūititanga ko Tāmaki where these images were produced. He also recognises the authority of Te Āti Awa and Taranaki Whānui ki Te Upoko o Te Ika rangatira who preside over te whenua o Te Whanganui-a-Tara where this exhibition is held. The artist and all contributors affirm that Māori sovereignty was never ceded - Toitū te Tiriti.

Our gallery re-opens again this Friday with an amazing ceramics show, Touch Pools by

‘Touch Pool’ explores the interactive nature of touch within ceramics, not just for the artist, but the audience as well. Here, we explore traditions of ceramics beyond pure function; vessels as sculptures and surfaces as stories. These spiky and lumpy shapes are inspired by under sea creatures and alien-like flowers, with underlying influence from ancient Greek pottery.

In these pieces, control and chance co-exist, as is the nature of ceramics. Hand-building is deliberate, but when all is given up to the will of the ‘kiln gods’, we must question our ideas of attachment and permanence.

In creating these ceramic works, Phoebe has sought to delve into the tactile act of creating ceramics as a sensory and contemplative practice. The aim is to connect human touch to the earth beneath us, both for the artist and the audience.

Please join us this Friday from 5-7pm for the opening or catch the show upstairs in the gallery over the next few weeks.
