We have been making leather in Whanganui since 1953.

Not all leather is what the label says it is.

The word on the front tells you how to feel about a material. It doesn't always tell you what it's made of. So here's how to judge it for yourself, whatever the tag says.

Pick it up. Real leather has weight, and it smells like leather. Look closely at the surface, does the colour live in the hide, or sit on top as a coating? And think about the whole life of the piece, not just how it looks on day one. Good leather softens, ages and develops a patina over years of use. It's made to be lived with, repaired and kept.

Some sustainability claims are hard to pin down. This one isn't.

Tasman and Silver Fern Farms have created New Zealand's first Toitū-certified Net Carbon Zero Leather. Every hide comes from Silver Fern Farms' Net Carbon Zero By Nature programme, where the emissions from raising the animal and finishing the leather are balanced out by trees growing on the same farms that supplied the hide.

The cattle behind it are grass-fed year-round on New Zealand pasture, GMO, hormone and antibiotic-free. The carbon accounting runs from farm to finished leather, and it's independently verified, not self-reported.

There's a second layer to it too. Farmers are paid for the carbon their trees remove, and that income goes back into more native planting and biodiversity on their land. So the leather doesn't just balance its own footprint, it helps fund the next generation of trees doing the same job.

It's a small percentage of what we produce today. But it's a working model for what responsible leather can look like at scale.

COMMONPLACE and McKinlays made Aotearoa's first Net Carbon Zero footwear.

We're still proud of what went into it.

Every hide came from Silver Fern Farms, then travelled to Whanganui to be tanned, then to Dunedin to become boots.

From pasture to finished boot, every step of this one was done properly.

Cecile Goldenberg got in touch to say she'd come across a stash of leather once owned by the manufacturing manager for Diana Ferrari Shoes in Australia. Among it were pieces carrying our own Tasman labels, dated 14 October 1999.

The leather is Merlin, tan #1415. More than 26 years old.

In Cecile's words: "Despite their age, these hides are still in absolutely perfect condition and I will be happy sewing them into handbags."

That's the thing about good leather. It doesn't expire on a shelf. Leather tanned in Whanganui in 1999 can sit for decades and still have decades of use left in it, whether that's a handbag, a boot, or a chair someone's grandchildren will inherit.

We can't take credit for what Cecile does with it next. But we can say this: it's exactly the kind of longevity we aim for every time leather leaves Tasman.
