Hi, just a little of my background for those people tagging me and sharing a picture of me in my Manus traditional attire and saying I’m a “penim skin Manus”. I say this with all due respect. Please learn to learn and stop assuming you know everything. Read this and let me know if you don’t understand so I can translate it in Tok Pisin.

My name is Elizabeth Wong, I’m 23 and my maternal grandmother is half Manus (Sohu) and ENB (Nordup) and my maternal grandfather is full Manus (Ponam) which makes my mother (Siwa Wong) 75% Manus.

My paternal grandmother is from Vunamami (Lumuvur ward 1) and my paternal grandfather is Chinese which makes my father a half-caste. I am more Manus than Tolai or ”kongkong” as most of you like to call it. I’ve lived almost all my life in East New Britain but in a home soaked in Manus Culture. I grew up with both my Manus grandparents who taught me all I know about my island home.

And even though I don’t look nor speak my languages, I embrace all my cultures. I don’t make up where I’m from.

My maternal grandfather owned a tailoring shop in Rabaul before the eruption. He tailored everything and anything and that’s where I learnt to design and sew. I only loved sewing after school and was always designing in between my homework sessions because I enjoyed it. I never in a million years thought I’d be doing it for other people which caused me to create this page.

I initially created this page in 2019 to give access to those who wanted their outfits sewn and to display my designs. I kindly ask those who are sharing my photo and criticising to stop. If you want to know anything about me feel free to message me. I go by Elizabeth Wong here on Facebook.

Thank you! 🙂
