The Mindanao State University has approved the offering of a Bachelor of Science in Oceanography at the Mindanao State University Tawi-Tawi College of Technology and Oceanography, marking a historic milestone for marine science education in the country. University officials described the new 171-unit curriculum as the first undergraduate BS Oceanography degree program of its kind in the Philippines and the first to be offered in Mindanao. The program was approved by the MSU System University Council during its May 2026 session.
The new degree is strategically located in Tawi-Tawi, one of the country's most important marine regions within the Sulu Archipelago. Surrounded by some of the most biologically diverse waters in the world, the province provides an ideal natural laboratory for studying ocean currents, marine ecosystems, fisheries, climate processes, and coastal resource management. University officials noted that the program aligns with international sustainability goals while leveraging the region's unique marine environment.
In Oceanography, students examine the physical, chemical, biological, and geological processes that shape the world's oceans. Oceanographers play critical roles in climate research, marine conservation, fisheries management, disaster preparedness, coastal planning, and the sustainable use of marine resources. As the Philippines is an archipelagic nation with vast territorial waters, experts have long emphasized the need for more specialized training in ocean sciences.
Researchers and educators believe the program could strengthen the country's capacity for marine research and environmental stewardship while producing future scientists equipped to address challenges such as climate change, coral reef degradation, biodiversity loss, and sustainable fisheries management. The development further reinforces Tawi-Tawi's growing role as a center for marine and environmental science in the Philippines.
