Tambourine Jewelry Wear a piece of history. Heirloom jewelry from the Philippines I was pregnant with my second child and knew that I wanted to do something and earn on the side.

It was 2011, we just returned to Manila, Philippines after my husband’s 3-year stint as an expat in Jakarta, Indonesia. An online business seemed to be the best way to go about it. I thought of selling tween costume jewelry which was something I used to make before I had kids. But the idea of creating, marketing and selling them seemed daunting for a then mother of 2 young kids. But I’ve always lo

ved jewelry- be it costume, fine, modern or vintage. On Etsy platform, if you want to sell something you didn’t create, it has to be either vintage or supplies. Vintage sounded more exciting so that was the start of my foray into vintage jewelry!

The following photos and paintings were taken during a visit to a heritage home called Balay ni Tana Dicang in Talisay city, Negros Occidental. These are some of the ladies from the prominent Lizares family.

Old Filipino jewelry are hard to date because there were no hallmarks or markings. One way to narrow it down is through paintings and photographs. The dates indicated here were based on when they were taken and not the age of the jewelry but it’s still a good way to gauge and see the changes throughout the years.

1. Late 1920s to early 1930s Remedios Lizares-Guinto wearing dainty drop earrings.

2. 1930s A lady wearing estrella or star pendant necklace, dangle pearl earrings and a brooch.

3. 1938 Doña Enrica Alunan-Lizares or “Tana Dicang” wearing a tamburin necklace.

4. 1930s to early 1940s Felisa Lizares wearing a tamburin necklace with matching dangle earrings.

5-8. Mid-1930s to early 1940s

ON LAYAWAY- A dreamy two tone 14K gold ring from the Philippines with my personal favorite- chunky old mine cut diamonds! This diamond ring has a sizeable 0.33ct central stone surrounded by 7 pieces at 0.15ct each. There are a few inclusions like feathering, typical of old stones. The diamonds have a soft romantic glow meant to sparkle under candlelight.

The ring was actually encased in an elaborate vintage setting- it looked too busy and wasn’t the original design. I’m annoyed as I forgot to take a photo of how it looked when we acquired it so I could have shared it. But the simple band felt more authentic as it shows the beauty of the antique cluster stone setting.

These old mine cut diamonds fall under the diamante category. Diamante diamonds are like good luck charms especially for business. It’s been professionally cleaned and in good antique condition. Do check out our reel to appreciate its beauty.

A pair of antique two tone 8K gold top rositas diamond earrings with 10K gold locks from the Philippines. They did not come with locks so we added new ones. The 14 diamonds are a mix of old and brilliant cut and quite big at 0.07 ct to 0.10 ct. They are included which is typical of old diamonds but quite sparkly. The earrings are almost 1/2 inch in diameter making them eye-catching. It's been professionally cleaned and in good antique condition.

SOLD- A big vintage 10K rose gold criolla earrings from the Philippines. These are also called "kamatsile" which means tamarind in Filipino. It is a traditional type of old Filipino jewelry which dates back from the Spanish colonial era. The antique ones are quite small but the vintage ones such as this pair is much bigger. It is also made of rose gold or "sinubong" which was believed to ward off negative energy.

We got this from a young lady in Bacolod. It once belonged to her grandmother. According to the young lady's mother, the grandmother already had it as early as the late 1940s when she was about 17-18 years old. It's been gently cleaned and in good vintage condition.

A pair of stunning vintage 14K gold earrings with multi-cut diamonds. These stud earrings feature 2 oval cuts- one is eye clean while the other has very minimal inclusions. Combined carat weight just for the oval diamonds are approximately 0.66 to 0.70 tcw. Due to their elongated surface area, oval diamonds often appear larger than round diamonds of the same carat weight. In addition, 12 small brilliant and 12 baguette cut diamonds surround these earrings.

It’s been professionally cleaned, sparkles brilliantly and in good vintage condition.
