Choosing an Insert: Microfiber VS Bamboo Charcoal VS H**p
📌 Microfiber
Microfiber is a synthetic type of fabric that is very good at absorbing moisture. They are soft and smooth, and you’ve probably already encountered this type of fabric before. These are used as towels, rags, and even cloths for cleaning eyeglasses.
It can absorb fluids very rapidly, but doesn’t have that much total capacity compared to other types of inserts. For this reason, microfiber shouldn’t be placed directly next to baby’s skin because they absorb moisture so well that they could cause skin dryness.
Unlike bamboo charcoal and h**p, which are made of natural fibers, microfiber doesn’t really need extra preparation before using it. One wash and it’s good to go.
📌 Bamboo Charcoal
Made of natural fibers, bamboo charcoal is known to have antimicrobial properties. It has a medium absorption rate, but can last up to 5-6 hours of use. It may even be used overnight.
Out of all the inserts, this one is the thickest at 5 layers. Bamboo charcoal inserts are made to be used alone because they could be so bulky when paired with other inserts. They are perfectly safe to be placed next to baby’s skin.
The charcoal particles embedded in the fabric give a dark color to the insert, which is good for stains.
Unlike microfiber, bamboo charcoal is made of natural fibers, and they have natural oils on their surface. For this reason, it is recommended to prep the inserts before first use to get rid of these oils, which repel water.
To prep inserts made of natural fabric, such as bamboo charcoal and h**p, wash them separately with hot water and a little bit of detergent so the oils would come off. It may take up to 3 washes or more to completely get the oils off.
📌 H**p
H**p has the greatest capacity out of all the insert fabrics. It can last more than 6 hours before needing to be changed, and so they are good for overnight use.
They aren’t as bulky as bamboo charcoal, and so they could be paired with microfiber for extra heavy wetters.
Like bamboo charcoal, h**p is made of natural fibers, and so it is safe to be placed right next to baby’s skin. Likewise, they contain natural oils so they would need to be prepped before first use.
