God’s Sovereignty & Our Free Will

When considering God’s will, some of the questions I frequently get asked have to do with inevitability. Will the Lord’s plan always be accomplished? Can we mess it up? Do we have a choice in what our lives can be? How much of God’s plan will He actively impose upon us, and how much will we be able to choose for ourselves?
These are some of the questions we all face when seeking God’s will—especially in terms of the decisions that are important to us. In order to better understand the Lord’s sovereignty and our free will, we need to take a look at two major aspects of the Lord’s plan: that which He has determined will happen and that which He desires to happen.
God’s determined (sovereign) will is what will absolutely be done … His inevitable, unchangeable, purposeful, and comprehensive plans which will bring Him great praise and glory. We must understand that God doesn’t make these types of plans exclusively for world events or nations. He also makes such plans for you and me (Ps. 139:16). In Ephesians 2:10, the Bible reveals that “we are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand so that we would walk in them.” The Lord actively prepares each of us for certain assignments and gives us unique gifts with which to make an impact on this world for Him (1 Cor. 12:7). God’s desired (permissive) will is where you and I live each day. God gives us choices so that we can exercise our free will in obeying Him. He also does so in order to test our hearts, to see whether we truly acknowledge Him as our God. His desired will is His personal involvement in our daily lives and His direction in our decisions. Therefore, whereas the Lord’s determined will is inevitable and unpredictable apart from what He’s revealed in His Word, the Father’s desired will for your life is knowable in the circumstances you experience. And it requires you to make a decision about who He is to you.

The most important thing for you to remember is that God is fully invested in His whole plan. If you’re seeking God and have a heart to do His will, you’re promised He will show you what to do.

God’s Will — The Big Picture

In Romans 12:2, God’s Word promises: “Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, so that you may prove what the will of God is, that which is good and acceptable and perfect.”

According to this verse in Romans, the will of God is good, acceptable, and perfect. There’s absolutely no indication here that the Lord’s plan for you will be unbearable, something you’ll hate, or something that’ll ruin your life. On the contrary, what the Father envisions for you is “good and acceptable and perfect.” These three words should fill all of us with peace and confidence.

How do we grow up? Well, we learn through life.

Have you ever gotten that off feeling when things seem to be going really well, for far too long? It’s just an uneasiness we do to ourselves to somehow brace our hearts and our minds in case things take a turn for the worse.

It’s the buffer we unknowingly erect around the things we desire most.

For example, have you ever found yourself sharing that loving look with your significant other and sensed a deep level of knowing—a warmth—only to have a very different feeling follow—almost immediately, almost instinctively? “Will this relationship last like this?” you wonder without really wondering at all. This thought is practically at the spirit level, deep in the sub-conscience of our soul. Our bodies recognize it and often respond physically and emotionally without our minds even being aware. A sea swirls in the abyss within you, muddling the initial feeling you first shared.

If you have ever felt this, you’re not alone. Most of us experience this, regularly. We may not recognize it because most of us don’t walk around analyzing ourselves all the time. But we will catch it in moments, if we pay attention even slightly—especially those moments punctuated by delight, love and good things.

Perhaps it’s a carryover from Adam and Eve who lived a life of blissful peace and luxury only to be quickly uprooted and even more quickly booted out of the garden. Within each of us exists an awareness that life is frail, love is fragile, health is never promised and ongoing peace is often a priceless carrot we seek but to little avail.

God knows that. Jesus knows that. That’s why He specifically told us to “become like little children” or we could not fully enter into the richness of His kingdom on earth (Matthew 18:3). Jesus made this analogy so clear because He knew that our doubts, suspicions and self-preservations would hold us back from belief.

He knew that a faith to move mountains had to be pure. Like a child’s.

He also knew that very few of us, as adults, would have that kind of faith at all.

At least not in all areas of our lives. Most of us have great faith in certain areas and yet no faith in others.Learning to trust in those areas we desire the most in one of the secrets to answered prayer

Where is Your Dream?

Everything about you is directly related to the inner dream in your heart. When you think about it for a moment, none of us have had any control over where we were born, when we were born, our parents and family, our strengths and weaknesses, our talents and abilities, our passions and desires.

Either you believe all those factors that determine who you are—were just chance situations--or you believe that life has a far grander plan.

Could it be that the overall reason you are good at one thing, and at the same time only have negative talent in other areas, is simply because you have been perfectly matched to fulfill the dream in your heart?

The greatest path to follow—where your Dream lies waiting for you—is at the end of all the strands of your life. Where they all converge like many strands woven into a magnificent and perfectly formed work of incredible art. Nearly all of the people I have helped to find and fulfill their dream miss this powerful truth:

Your dream is exactly and precisely located where all your talents, abilities, desires, passions etc., all come together.
Your dream is located right in the heart of your greatest strengths, your most amazing talents, and your strongest desires. Not where you have weakness, not where you struggle to even be average, not where you hate doing things.

That’s why everyone who finally finds and lives their dream are so fulfilled and joyful. Why? They finally fit perfectly. They were born for this! You were born to live out your dream. The first part of identifying your dream is in identifying what you love to do and what you are great at doing.

Personal Reflection:Take a moment to write down in your personal journal or on a piece of paper or the notes section of your smartphone/computer – what are the things you are exceptionally good at doing. It’s okay to write down your strengths. You may be a great cook. Or you could be very good at bringing people encouragement, lifting spirits. You could be good at fixing things. Whatever it is, write it down. Your strengths and your skills are a clue to your dreams.

Now, pray to God and ask Him to reveal how you are to pursue living out the full expression of the dream He has placed in your heart.

Here are a few more Scriptures to reflect on as you pray:
Hebrews 11:1, Luke 1:37, Philippians 4:13, Proverbs 3:5,6..

Choose To Posture Your Heart.

Guard your heart from the hidden snares and attacks from the enemy. Satan wants to harden your heart. He wants bitterness to rule and to guide your decisions. He wants you to focus on the past. He wants you to focus on your enemies. Satan wants you to focus on your cares and worries. He wants to distract you from seeking God and fulfilling purpose. John‬ ‭10:10‬ ‭KJV‬‬ states, “The thief cometh not, but for to steal, and to kill, and to destroy: I am come that they might have life, and that they might have it more abundantly.” Satan wants to keep you distracted. Choose to shift your focus onto God.

Position and posture your heart on God’s Word. Although the weapon may form but it will not prosper. You may see the storm form but it will not prosper. Hold fast to God’s Word. Choose to confess God’s Word and let God lead your path. There is no weapon that the enemy can form that will conquer you. Choose to submit yourself to God’s Way of doing things and He will guide your path. Build your heart on God’s Word.

Don't Waste Time

We need to be so self-controlled that we don't waste time. That doesn't mean that we can never do anything fun. It doesn't mean we can't do things that we enjoy.

We don't need to be rigid, stiff, or boring. But we do need to use our time wisely, choosing to give the best part of our day to spend time with God.

The Word encourages us to be prepared, saying, "Hear counsel, receive instruction, and accept correction, that you may be wise in the time to come" (Proverbs 19:20). Starting your day with God's instruction will keep you walking in wisdom, making the most of your time.

Be Fully Satisfied

Many people pursue possessions and awards to satisfy their inner need for contentment. But we can be fully satisfied in lean times and in times of abundance, whether we abase or abound (see Philippians 4:12), when we learn to enjoy fellowship with the Lord as soon as we wake up.

Before you are fully awake, you can start talking to God. Just thank Him for seeing you through yesterday, and for being with you today. Praise Him for providing for you, and for working out all the situations in your life for your good.

Ask Him to make you aware of His presence all day long. Peace fills your heart when your mind is on the Lord. Nothing is more satisfying than walking with God.

Don't Lose Focus

Sometimes we lose our focus. We can be walking in love all day, going along fine, until someone comes along and offends us. As soon as we forget our focus of love, we stop making progress and come to a standstill - aggravated, upset, and offended.

Understand that the mind is a battlefield. If you don't stop Satan when he gets into your thoughts, you are not going to stop him from getting into your life. Stay focused. Ask God to help you remain full of love, no matter what comes your way today.

Be Secure

God can strengthen us to the point that we can make progress even during trouble. The psalmist said of God, "He makes my feet like hinds' feet [able to stand firmly or make progress on the dangerous heights of testing and trouble]. You have girded me with strength for the battle" (Psalm 18:33).

Trials and testing do not come to cause us to lose stability. They are opportunities to prove the strength of God. We don't have to waver in our confidence. Nothing will keep us from making progress today because God is our strength.
