Growing up, my mom and I used to go to Carbon Market and thrift shop clothes or "mangukay", that was one of our bonding moments. UkayUkay selling starts after business hours when offices, banks, and other establishments are closed because that's where the vendors would display their UkayUkay items, in front of those establishments (Carbon Market area). Imagine scavenging on those big piles of clot
hing after sunset with the other UkayUkay goers. The chances of getting an item in really good condition was also not that high compared to what's available now. That’s where the term UkayUkay was coined because you have to “ukay” or sift through all those mixed clothing. My mom would tell me not to be obvious when we found some great finds so that the seller wouldn’t price it higher hehe which worked and we could also haggle if we bought more than 5 items. It was fun as well as challenging because the pieces were either a bit faded, had stains (some washable and some were not), needed button or zipper replacements or some stitches, or would need actual rework. So when we found something we really liked and in excellent condition, it was such a joy! It was truly finding a treasure in someone else's trash. For those who knew me, I started my UkayUkay selling journey in 2017. I wanted to sell shorts for men and women and since there were only a few suppliers based in Cebu with mostly only dresses bales and quite expensive, I bought my very first ukay bundle or bale from Luzon. I went through the legitimacy check of the seller but I had no idea which codes were good. I know UkayUkay is risky but the seven thousand plus pesos I paid for that was mostly crap, I was discouraged. I needed to price them higher and couldn’t even break-even! So I stopped and moved on. Then 2020 happened and in December last year, I found myself buying online and nalingaw ko sigeg “mine” sa mga live selling on Facebook. It rekindled my love for UkayUkay and here I am hoping you’ll find joy on the pieces you buy from us here in Bold & Subtle. That’s our UkayUkay story, what’s yours?
