All seamen are seafarers, but not all seafarers are necessarily seamen.
Seaman and seafarer are terms often used interchangeably, but there's a subtle distinction between them. While both refer to individuals who work on ships, the specific roles and responsibilities can vary.
Seaman: A Traditional Maritime Role
A seaman is typically associated with the traditional, hands-on maritime profession. They are skilled in navigating ships, ship handling, and performing tasks related to the ship's operation. Seamen often have a deep-rooted connection to the sea and a strong understanding of maritime traditions.
Seafarer: A Broader Term
A seafarer is a more encompassing term that encompasses a wider range of individuals working on ships. This includes not only seamen but also engineers, chefs, medical personnel, and other professionals who contribute to the ship's operations. While a seafarer might not have the same level of hands-on experience with the ship's navigation and sailing, they are still integral to the ship's functioning.
