Do we stop and give up our faith when we face overwhelming trials?
Sometimes, the difficulties we face bring us to our knees either to seek wisdom from God or to doubt His ways towards us. Normally we don’t know that we need it until such time that we cannot produce an answer to all our questions to why all these things are happening in our lives. With troubled hearts, we tell Him, “Lord teach me what I cannot see.”
The scripture in James gives us a comforting truth:
If any of you lacks wisdom, you should ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault, and it will be given to you. But when you ask, you must believe and not doubt, because the one who doubts is like a wave of the sea, blown and tossed by the wind.
James 1:2-6
Wisdom is available to those who ask God. And He gives it generously without remorse. He gives it with open hands and not with clenched fists. And we are encouraged to ask not just in times of trouble. When we seek His precepts, we submit and trust the Giver. Then we respond to it. We respond in Faith. We believe without doubt.
And our believing by faith does not just apply to Him giving us wisdom. He is a good God who promises us of peace, restoration, healing, forgiveness and newness. Because of the Lord’s great love we are not consumed, for his compassions never fail. They are new every morning; great is His faithfulness (Lam. 3:22-23).
The waves in the surface of the sea are generated by the action of the wind hence the verse, “the one who doubts is like a wave of the sea, blown and tossed by the wind” (Jam. 1:6). In this life we will surely encounter heavy winds and storms and to survive in this sea, unlike the waves , the vessel (us) must remain solid and steadfast. Not doubting but trusting. The Bible says that those who put their trust in God are immovable (Psalm 125:1). As His Children, we know that we have this hope as an anchor for the soul, firm and secure (Heb. 6:19). And this hope in Christ will anchor us to the refuge of God's mercy and unfailing love that neither heavy winds nor storms can ever break in this lifetime and in eternity.
Praise be to God through our Lord Jesus Christ!
