Shawn Stussy, a Californian surfer born in 1954, founded Stüssy in the early 1980s. He began by shaping surfboards and scrawling his surname across them with a broad-tipped marker, creating the now-iconic signature logo. That same hand style soon appeared on T-shirts and caps, helping launch the brand beyond the beach. The graffiti-influenced script stood out for its raw, personal feel and quickly resonated with surf, skate, punk, and emerging hip-hop communities. Largely unchanged for over four decades, the Stüssy signature remains one of streetwear’s most recognizable and enduring symbols worldwide.
