BENEFITS OF CLOTH DIAPERS - HEALTH
Chemicals in Disposable Diapers
We don't realize it, but the main concern in terms of health with using disposable diapers is that they contain a large number of materials and chemicals, such as dioxins, that are linked to long-term health conditions.
A potential health concern of using disposable diapers is the absorbent material used in them which is sodium polyacrylate -- a type of super absorbent polymer which becomes a gel-like substance when wet. It was removed from use in tampons due to its possible link to toxic shock syndrome, a life-threatening bacterial infection.
Disposable diapers also contain traces of dioxin -- an extremely toxic byproduct of the paper-bleaching process. They are among the most toxic chemicals and are listed by the EPA as highly carcinogenic chemicals. (Source: Greenpeace)
Disposable diapers contain tributyl-tin (TBT) -- a toxic pollutant known to cause hormonal problems in humans. (Source: Greenpeace)
Cloth diapers, however, are free of the many chemicals contained in disposable diapers. They come in a wide range of materials that use natural materials without the chemicals you would find in disposable diapers.
