Lilaktub - also known as Lilagtob (or nilaktob) originates from the Kalinga province.

Its patterns are characterized by a distinct honeycomb shape. The design is inspired by the "inammata" design, which symbolizes an eye used to ward off evil. These act as protective talismans, similar to Kalinga tattoo patterns.

Worn during festivities, it is traditionally given as a community token ("lilay") to partner tribes during "bodong" (peace pact) celebrations.

To tell the difference between MAGUINDANAO INAUL and THAILAND POWER LOOM SONGKET, look at the front. In Authentic Inaul, the design with glittered thread will be thicker (mas makapal) as it is paired with yellow thread. For power loom songket, the design uses purely glittered thread and is less thick than authentic inaul.

In General: HOW TO TELL IF A FABRIC IS HANDWOVEN OR MACHINE-MADE?

HAND WEAVES will have slight imperfections, knots, minor inconsistencies as a product of human craftsmanship. Slight variations in thickness and spacing between threads suggest manual work. MACHINE MADE FABRICS are perfectly uniform and display computerized perfection.

HAND WEAVES have a softer feel. MACHINE MADE FABRICS are tightly knit and often feel stiffer.

HAND WEAVES edges (Selvage) may be slightly uneven, have long hanging threads and fray easily (nagninisnis). MACHINE MADE FABRICS will have edges that are almost always perfectly straight and smoothly finished.

When looking for authentic handwoven materials, consider the price (handwoven is generally more expensive due to labor).

If our northern weaves were threatened by china machine made fakes, our southern weaves now face dangers of thailand machine made songkets.

The local government of Baguio coordinated with the Philippine Textile Research Institute and passed an ordinance banning fakes from local shops.

The local governments of Maguindanao should do the same.

In the meantime, best to purchase directly from weavers. If the price is too low, it is likely not handwoven. Check the threads. Too perfect and fine is a red flag. Look at the ends of the clothā€¦ if machine made, the threads will be too tight together (hindi nag tatastas). Look at the back of the weave, if makinis, perfect - it is machine made. Look at the design/pattern - weaves from Mindanao will have Islamic influence, not just random ethnic looking prints.

When in doubt, ask.
