Someone once said that men’s fashion is cyclical. He felt that menswear is currently experiencing a cyclical transition in terms of men’s suiting proportions. It’s the classic Thom Browne vs Tom Ford debate; two leading American menswear designers who are polar opposites in the way they think a man should look.

He wrote that for the past couple of years Thom Browne has been very influential with his extremist (and trendy) approach to enlightening men about slim, cropped, and minimalist proportions. If you have recently begun wearing your pants a little shorter than usual, chances are he had some influence, whether you were conscious of it or not. Browne also pioneered the now popular slim lapel (the 60’s “Mad Men” look) with his standard 2-2.5” notch lapels. This has been the “fashion forward” lapel for some time now, but in my opinion has recently begun its slow journey out of the forefront.

Tom Ford, by contrast, has a different approach. Known for his easier-to-wear more classic silhouettes, full cut pants and wide peak lapels, Tom is taking cues from a new decade: the 70s. The natural progression of the menswear cycle is to move from Thom’s proportions to Tom’s proportions.

He concluded that the “fashion forward” lapels are probably large (3-3.5”) and fully peaked.

He has always believed that in menswear, it is not in the fashion trend but in the style that really matters.

Therefore you should wear whatever lapel works best for you. If you’re a skinny, small-framed guy who likes a really slim contemporary cut (like Thom Browne), then slim notch lapels will probably work best. On the other hand, if you’re more average sized, with a broader chest and wider shoulders (more like Tom Ford) then large peak lapels make more sense to cover the space and draw attention upward to the face.

His big advice: don’t worry about following the trend, be more concerned with figuring out what proportions work best for you personally. In my case, I fall somewhere in between, so on any given night you can find me in lapels of any shape or size.

How Filipinos should wear and match neutrals

Challenge Axed!!! I guess us Pinoys have at some point just forego the neutrals in our wardrobe because matching them up can be quite time consuming or tedious. Again our confidence amongst blacks and blues have given way to looking good in neutrals.

So why should Filipinos in general exert effort to wear neutrals, on top of a fact that you bought those khakis and that brown shoe on a whim? Besides using them once a week on a Sunday outing or Friday casual, you can easily incorporate them through the business week and make a statement out of it. That navy with white that gives you a bold look, can very well be a neutral and we assure you that neutrals will do the job as well.

By using a pop color your basic look will be noticed, more so in a sea of dark suits. A statement that is not loud because neutrals never are, and yet Filipinos will still have a fresh look. Not as fancy as a Hawaiian but still a more warm viscera. Tan, beige, ivory, khaki, soft shades of browns that look good under artificial lighting and natural light.

So how to start wearing neutrals? Majority of Filipinos should wear something close to their skin tone. And in doing so, combine it with a lighter hue shirt, or shoes and apart from color, you may also use the texture of the fabric to mix and match the outfits. The slight contrast of the different texture and color will create a look so attractive to the eye as opposed to just keeping all colors on the same palette and grain.
A Filipino suit doesn’t necessarily need a waistcoat since we are in a tropical country, but for those who will be using a waistcoat or vest, you can also use that as a way to contrast the color of your suit. Allow a lined vest with a pop color, a great tip for those who prefer not to stand out but still need a great stand out color.

For Filipino casuals wearing collared polo shirts, try greys with slightly charcoal grey pants or shorts, or tan shoes with choco browns tops with pop ivory.

With a variety of neutrals that can be quite tiresome to even start on, the benefits would most likely give you that incentive to try harder. That we are taught to blend in is good advice, however, looking good while blending in with your neutrals on you is not so bad either. Challenge should be accepted.

Should Filipinos wear black suits in Business meetings?

As a general rule gray blue and brown suits are more business appropriate.

However Filipinos suits tend to be more conservative and black is the go to color. It doesn’t even end in suits. Monochromatic black have captured the modern Filipino men.

Misguided by famous celebrities’ politicians wearing black suits in their formal functions, formal being the keyword. US Politicians have donned on black suits and made suits their signature for Power.

The color Black is a style on its own. Black is subdued, yet enigmatic. Sleek and of course the slimming factor that Filipinos who buys suits oftentimes navigates towards.

Blue Filipino suits in place of black suits have become popular for formal occasions, ironic really since blue is for business and black is for formal.

But blue looks so good that Jeffrey designed a Blue tuxedo with thin wool lapels. Pretty amazing how that turned out with its charming and affable persona.

If it works, it works. Redesigning, modernizing Filipino formal occasions, that’s well and good however we need to remind you, that Business appropriate should also include gray, brown and blue and that blue being the most suitable, no matter how sexy black is.

A suit per season

Wikipedia says “The Philippines has maritime climate that is usually hot and humid”.
We have the March and May hot season or in filipino terms tag init and tag araw. Rainy seasons usually happens from June to November with Monsoons or Habagat looming in and out of the Philippines from May to October. The third season of the Philippines is the cool and dry season from December to February with the very rare Amihan or Northeast monsoon from November to April.

A friend once said that the breeze from Manila Bay can be the Filipinos friend and most times their foe. I guess because the winds in the Philippines usually comes with that 21 °C (70 °F) to 32 °C (90 °F) and that is why most of us think donning on a suit is the most illogical choice of clothing.

You guys might want to rethink that after reading this post because for every season there is a suit.
Let us start with the easiest …

Wools Suits

Wools may be the only fabric most Filipino tailors use and why most Filipinos prefer not to wear suit. Most of the times Filipino tailor just recommend polyester wools because of the price and that mistake is costing most Filipino tailor a lot because it has turned most Filipinos away from wool suits. Wools are supposed to be part of the breathable clothing. Fused and Poly wools have changed that idea because it really is quicker to tailor and a lot cheaper. But if you want a wool suit that you can wear in the Philippines, go authentic and go non fused, because they are natural fibers woven not glued together by the best wool mills in the world and that will make a big difference.

Cotton Suits

Another Natural cloth fabric that has been used in a variety of designs and cuts that has been tightly woven to look like a wool suit but still not fused. The smoothness is what makes it popular with those who have issues with the more or less coarse wool. Best for Tropical Countries like the Philippines since they provide a more airy feel.

SeerSucker Suit

Sunday, Summery, Cheerio. Just a few words to describe a should be popular suit for Filipinos. Filipinos have worn seer sucker shirts and it has been very popular, little did we know that Seer sucker can be used in suits too. Since most Filipinos associate wearing a suit with business, they really haven’t gotten around to having one tailored with this fabric. But check out Jacksons Tailors seersucker suits in makati shop and try it on to get the feel of it. Can be worn for Tagaytay Weddings or Boracay beach weddings. This piece of ingenuity will probably get you winded, oh cheerio.

Linen Suits

Oldest most natural cloth fiber of the Egyptians to Filipinos. Porous, woven exquisitely, vibrant and beautiful. Only hold back for most Filipino tailors is it is hard to sew because of the natural stretch it has and it wrinkles easily. But if tailored by Jacksons then you are in good hands. Linen suits should ultimately be worn during our cold rainy seasons because they are thick but they stop moisture like a natural plastic. Very tricky but gives out the best results.

Pina Suit

Save the best for last. Our very own natural fiber used to be associated only for Barong tagalog until Jackson Tailors started using it for suits and tuxedos. Difficult to tailor just like linen but for quite opposite reasons, linen fibers have thicker weaves while Pina fabrics have thinner weaves making it really very very very challenging to tailor. But Jacksons Tailors have proven to be the most patient of all tailors and mastering the Pina requires this asset. We have to be patient because we want to craft the best and most beautiful suits in the World so we encapsulated and transformed our philippine pride to its most glorious handiwork.
Of course the most recommended since it is naturally cooler to wear and the most distinguished fabric. The only acceptable fabric for black and white tie other than wools and that makes it irreplaceable.
