This is McKenna Schueler’s take on how we can reframe gaining weight as an act of self-care. Our bodies change all the time and it may be because of hormones, age, illnesses, diet, exercise, and so much more.

Societal standards have conditioned us to believe that the “only acceptable” weight change is weight loss. Those who gained weight are shamed, shunned, and labeled as lazy.

What if we change this perspective to see that gaining weight is actually an act of caring for your physical and mental health? That feeding yourself adequately and having a good relationship with food is something that should be normalized? Gaining weight shouldn’t be seen as permanent and irreversible and as individuals, we should focus more on feeling and becoming healthy, not just looking like it. Proper nourishment is needed to survive and thrive, even if it makes us gain a few extra pounds.

“Don’t mind the haters” is an advice that’s easier said than done. Often, people always have negative things to say about those who do not fit the societal mold. Too fat, too skinny, too dark, too light, too average.

When people criticize your looks, remember that it is not your fault. You cannot control what others will say, but you can control how you react and respond to the situation. Build self-confidence strong enough that you do not falter when people make comments about how you look. Let them know that they have offended and hurt you, and try to stop engaging with them. Of course, this doesn’t happen overnight. It starts with the little things you do everyday to cultivate your life, personality, and self-worth.
