𝗡𝗘𝗪𝗦 𝗙𝗘𝗔𝗧𝗨𝗥𝗘 | 𝗥𝗲𝘃𝗶𝘃𝗮𝗹 𝗼𝗳 𝗔𝗦𝗧𝗲𝗮𝗻 𝗙𝗮𝘀𝗵𝗶𝗼𝗻, 𝗥𝗲𝗶𝗺𝗮𝗴𝗶𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗦𝘂𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗶𝗻𝗮𝗯𝗶𝗹𝗶𝘁𝘆

ASTeans from the Bachelor of Industrial Technology - Garments technology (BINDTECH-GT) called for action and sustainability on "Sustainable Style: Advancing Responsible Fashion on Campus" held at Trillanes Hall on Wednesday, April 8.

The event was spearheaded by the Fashion Designers' Club (FDC), which aims to raise awareness on the adverse effects of "Fast-Fashion", caused by the mass production of low-quality textiles, and to introduce sustainability practices within the institution.

Dr. DeAnna C. Regnim, the Overall Project Head, shared that they previously held a similar event, in partnership with Department of Trades and Industry (DTI), last August 17, 2025, the "Posturiosa: Estilo de BISCAST", that highlighted the skills and artistry of the ASTeans. This time, however, it was a movement and a call to action.

"We also advocate sustainable fashion doon kasi may segment na fashion show doon sa Posturiosa, and dito meron din. However, yung difference lang [is that] it's more of awareness talaga. So, merong talk and then may mga video clips to be presented na sila yung gumawa just to raise awareness on sustainable fashion," Dr. Regnim emphasized.

During the Talk on Sustainable Fashion with Jerome Bolvar, it was discussed that fashion sustainability encompasses evaluating purpose for purchase, clothes longevity, and the accountability that consumers upholds towards the environment.

"Before we buy a jeans or a shirt, dapat iisipon ta kung sain ta daw ni gagamiton. Pirang years daw ni mahaloy sako? So, these are the things [that] we have to consider before we buy a garment or clothes," Mr. Bolvar said.

Conversely, Roan Babar talked about the negative impacts of synthetic fibers or polyester for its microplastic properties and dyeing that harms the environment. He also addressed the dark side of textile Mass Production encouraging mass exploitation among workers.

"In textile dyeing, there is 2,700 liters of water consumption on every inch of carbon. So, in that point, the second level is that it costs a lot of water consumption, especially in just textile dyeing. There's a process of textile dyeing. So, in that way, it causes water pollution and [causes] crisis in water supply second of this is microplastic waste."

"Also, human rights. The number one cause is the work exploitation. One of them is [the] 80% of [them] are young women often working in a sweatshop, conditioned for self-reviewing jobs," he added.

Following the Talk on Sustainability, ASTean fashionistas proved that style has no expiration date as it is showcased in creativity and artistry. Through their technical demonstration on refashioning, they presented tutorials on transforming old textiles into practical, modern essentials. This inspired the community to reclaim the purpose of their wardrobe and wear their own unique imaginations.

The event reached its peak as models ignited the runway at the Sustainable Attire Showcase, proudly flaunting their sustainable glam and bringing the upcycled masterpieces to life.

Atasha Magpantay, from BETMET 2A, shared that the event was great platform to raise awareness, considering the current state of the planet.

"Fashion should not be only for aesthetic, but we should also consider the sustainability and It's impact to the environment. It's impact socially and economically that we should consider if it's healthy not only for us, but also for our environment and how it would affect the environment," she stated.

The Sustainable Style Showcase redefined "new" by swapping fast-fashion's disposable culture for craftsmanship with a conscience. Building on this momentum, the Fashion Designers' Club (FDC) encouraged ASTeans to continue their creative journey at the next fashion show this coming May.
