The ombrellino is not decoration.
The Rituale Romanum teaches:
“In a procession with the Most Blessed Sacrament, all reverence and dignity are to be observed” (Titulus IV).
As Adrian Fortescue explains in The Ceremonies of the Roman Rite Described, ceremonial is the outward expression of the Church’s faith.
When Christ is carried in procession, the Church surrounds Him with visible signs of honor. The ombrellino is one of those ancient signs.
A simple way to show deeper reverence for the Blessed Sacrament.
