Filipino artistry and creativity are evident in various art forms but what makes the weaving culture distinct is it's power to unite the people as strong, resilient communities bound by living tradition and colourful textile patterns and motifs.

As an outstanding expression of communal creativity during the COVID-19 pandemic, the Tingguians of Abra in the Cordillera Region can take great pride in the amazing diversity and beauty of their textile arts. And, for Sine Abreño's 3rd edition of the Abrenian Heritage Film Festival 2021, the official poster honours the Tingguian weavers which can match or even surpass other weaving traditions in the world.

Natural dyes in Abra

During the years of Spanish colonization, historians documented that the Philippines used to export indigo dye, prized for its vibrant blue color. While modernization has brought about commercial fashion and synthetic dye, the people of Abra are reviving their history of natural dye. In Namarabar, Penarubia, Tingguians are continuing their traditional practices of harvesting natural dye from the plants around them.

Abra’s indigo dye comes from the malatayun plant, producing many shades of the color blue. Other colors come from different plants. Examples are pink and maroon from the sapang plant, brown from narra, yellow from the tawa-tawa and turmeric. Combined with Abra’s rich traditions of backstrap and loom weaving and embroidery, the local textile industry of the province promises much opportunity for livelihood and continuation of cultural traditions.
