Gen-Z, the Anxious Generation
Get to know this youbger generation who think deeply, who ask deep questions, who are so curious about the world, and the generation that ask who Jesus is. How do we relate to young people nowadays since they have different ways of communication. How do Gen-Zs pretty much grew up at the boom of technology, where social media had no rules, the internet had no rules, which eventually resulted to an axious generation, that is, constantly online, comparing themeselves to their peers and to other people, seeking attention, judging other people, communicating with much less manners. But if you get to encounter the youth of today, you get to minister to them, you get to know them intentionally and deeply, maybe we could understand where they are coming from.
How would you describe the youth of today, what sets them apart from the generations before them. Gen-Z is basically "digital natives". They grew up in a generation where technology was readily available for them, unlike us millenials that we had normal telephones that we could ring up and still been able to live lives and play outside, Those days where we had "dial up internet". You don't see people as much as you want playing outside as much as we did. They grew up in the generation that was really in the phase of the screen. But, at the same time, they're entreprenurial.They know how to be able to make things work, they are very intelligent, they know how to ask good questions, very smart to be able to work than our age. As young as a teen ager, they are already involve to so much information making them ask many, many questions.
Iba sila sa ibang generations because, other generations, I guess sa family pa kinukuha ang sense of self. Pero ang Gen-Z sa career and education.
This generation values social justice. They're the most socially connected but when it comes to in depth relationship, I'll give them 4 out of 10. A lot of gen-zs telling that they are atheist but they're actually agnostics. They just don't care about God about faith because they don't see these things relevant. I wonder how hard or how easy it is to share the fospel to them. And pandemic made it even worse. They were already digital natives. It was already hard to connect socially and physically, then pandemic happened, making them even more isolated. So having a good 3 years of their lives totally on their own not allowed to go out, not allowed to build relationships at the community.
This generation is looking for a better community, but doesn't know how to cultivate that.
The fact that they're posting on social media, looking for likes and hearts, it's a cry for this generation to value them, want them.
From my personal experience, this generation is so great at reading people, they know when you are fake. This generation doesn't expect you to be perfect, they expect us to be real and vulnerable, they don't expect you to be their role model that will epitimize everything. They just want us to be real and they just want us to be the person where they can say, "he makes mistakes, but he's still able to live with it". That living this life following Jesus, is not all about rainbows and flowers. It's gonna be something challenging, making mistakes every now and then and it's okay, as long as you get back up.
Stories and testimonies are very helpful because the youth could see na nangyayari pala ito kina ate at kuya. Lets make them know although struggles never end, they will always have people to journey with.
I still have so much in mind that I would want to expound especially regarding s*x, gender and identity, here but I rather not to dahil naiintindihan ko na sarado katoliko tayo.
So, I would just leave you with a question: If you were to share with them even just one aspect of your own walk with Jesus for them to be encouraged by, what would that be? See less
