𝗜’𝗺 𝗮 𝗻𝘂𝗿𝘀𝗲 𝗶𝗻 𝗮 𝗽𝘂𝗯𝗹𝗶𝗰 𝗵𝗼𝘀𝗽𝗶𝘁𝗮𝗹.
My salary barely covers the bills, but I stay—because this is what I was called to do.

I grew up in a small town in Quezon, the eldest of three. My mother used to sell vegetables in the market, and my father was a driver in Manila. When my younger brother got sick years ago, I watched how one nurse in the provincial hospital cared for him. She was kind and gentle. I never forgot that. That’s when I decided: I want to be that kind of person someday.

Now, years later, here I am. But sometimes I question my decision.
There are nights when I come home after a 16-hour shift, the fluorescent lights of the ward still flickering in my head. My uniform smelling faintly of alcohol, antiseptic and fatigue, with only ₱200 left in my wallet.

Meanwhile, I scroll through my feed and see former classmates working abroad. They are posting pictures with cars, nice homes, vacation trips. They look happy and successful. I’d be lying if I said I didn’t envy them.

But then I remember last week...

Prayer for November

𝗪𝗔𝗟𝗔 𝗡𝗔 𝗞𝗔𝗠𝗜𝗡𝗚 𝗨𝗟𝗔𝗠
nu’ng araw na ‘yon. Huling kanin nasa kaldero na, lamig na lamig.
Walang sardinas. Walang noodles.
Isang itlog at isang sibuyas na lang ang natira sa kusina.

Pero si Nanay, hindi nagpatalo.
Kumuha siya ng Skyflakes, dinurog, tapos tinosta sa kaunting mantika.
Habang niluluto, hiniwa niya ang sibuyas. Hinalo niya lahat sa kawali, nilagay ang itlog at sinangkutsa.
‘Yun na ang ulam namin.

Nabusog kami.
Pero higit pa sa tiyan, yung puso ko ang punong-puno.
Kasi kahit gipit, si Nanay laging may paraan.

Ngayon na kaya ko nang magpadeliver ng kahit anong ulam,
minsan nilalagyan ko pa rin ng dinurog na Skyflakes ang sisig ko.
Paalala na minsan, sa hirap at gutom,
doon mo matitikman ang pinakamasarap na klase ng pagmamahal.
