In 1971, Nike made its first move into footwear. Driven by obsession, Bill Bowerman experimented at home, pouring urethane into a waffle iron in search of better traction. After failed attempts, he got it right.

The result was the Moon Shoe. Debuted at the 1972 Olympic Trials, its crater-like sole left a mark that would define decades of innovation.
