Earlier this year, I was pleased to find one of my natural dyeing studies included in the British Council (Pakistan) report mapping Sustainable Fashion Ecosystems in Pakistan. As an emerging maker in Pakistan, it is encouraging to be included in publications, conversations and initiatives surrounding sustainability.

About the report:
In 2023, British Council Pakistan launched a programme to support and advocate for a more sustainable, regenerative, equitable and transparent fashion and textile industry in Pakistan.

The first phase of the programme involved an extensive research effort, engaging a diverse range of industry stakeholders through surveys, interviews, focus groups, field visits, workshops and in-depth secondary research.

The research culminated in a comprehensive country report, highlighting key findings and outlining a path forward that prioritises sustainability through the revival of indigenous practices, support for local businesses and strategic shifts in the industry’s approach.

This report explores the current state of Pakistan’s fashion and textile industry and the perils and promise it holds for a more sustainable future. Our narrative shifts across the country’s vast industrial hubs, bustling metropolises and rural landscapes to chronicle the environmental, social and cultural impact of this industry. It examines the concept of sustainability as it is understood and practised in Pakistan, while also locating it within a larger global context.

Isn't it beautiful when organic materials come together? Such as nature, colour, surfaces and fibre. I love wood stained spoons from stirring pots of natural colour goodness. Something so lasting and beautiful about it. Do you feel drawn to anything particular in such a way as well? 🌿✨️

Student outcomes from Introduction to Dyeing with Nature Workshop held at TMUC for Fashion Textiles, Art and Design, HNC, HND and UCA students last semester.

Students from Rawalpindi and Islamabad joined to create a palette of 12 colours, exploring experimental dyeing techniques, which led to sample pieces to develop their portfolio.

Are you interested in natural dyeing or someone you know? Drop a line to be added to my directory of interested contacts who hear firsthand about events and workshops 🌿🌼

Carrots make dye. Did you know this?! 😏🥕

How many of us look at scraps differently after we use them for creative activities?

I have that wonderful enlightenment with kitchen waste. It is magical when items doomed for the dumps are used to make something beautiful, useful, gentle. The way we are coated in chemicals– from clothes to dyes to packaging to food processing– I believe natural and organic is a luxury worth investing in!

We consistently foreground issues of belonging, migration, homelands, colonialism, identity, and representation across our programme. Equality, diversity and inclusion is embedded in all our work, and now with support from , we have embarked on an ambitious two-year project championing diversity and inclusion within the art and design curriculum.

We began in late 2024 by contacting school partners to introduce the project, before holding meetings with PGCE programme leads, PGCE teachers, and school staff to build shared understanding. Following this, PGCE teachers met
with our team, followed by a racial literacy and anti-racism CPD session led by Jayanti Shah, co-founder This encouraged reflection on educational journeys and the role of art educators as change-makers.

Artists were then recruited through an Open Call process. These include Susmita Bhattacharya, Edgar Lushaju, Greg Bunbury, Abeer Kayani, and Mataio Austin Dean.

Look out for fur ther updates as the project continues!

Foraging from SPARC; garden at their workshop venue in Islamabad.

These plants led to a series of pattern development workshops where participants executed knowledge of repeats using nature. This workshop series is part of our Ecologies of Making project, supported by funding from the British Council with Indus Arte as the host organisation.

Stay tuned for more colour goodness with natural dyes showcased in its glory.
