Where Did You Learn to Dress Well?

I want to share something I have observed over years of working with professionals across Pakistan.

When I meet a very well dressed man and ask him where he learned to dress well, almost every time the answer is the same.

My father.

Not a course. Not a book. Not a consultant. Simply a father who dressed well every day. Who chose his clothes carefully. Who polished his shoes. Who never once sat his son down to explain any of it.

The son just watched. And without realising it he learned.

Today a client visited me who was not well dressed. He had brought his teenage son to sit in on the consultation. The boy said nothing throughout. But he was watching everything.

When the consultation was ending I said something simple.

If you want to give your son the best gift you can give him, start dressing well. I guarantee you he will too. Because children do not learn what you tell them. They learn what you show them every single day.

He was quiet for a moment.

Then he said it makes a lot of sense.

Then he looked at his son.

His son looked back at him.

He bought a complete wardrobe package before he left.

Not because of the fabric or the combinations , though both are exceptional. He bought it because he understood something in that moment that no amount of logic could have made him understand.

His son was watching. His son was learning. And what his son was learning was not yet the standard this father wanted to leave behind.

The most powerful image consultant most men ever have is their father.

The tragedy is that most fathers never know it.

A senior banker came to me with the wrong diagnosis.

Twenty years ago in New York I met a client who changed how I think about presence.

He was successful by every measure. A senior banker with years of experience and genuine capability. But he was not getting the response his ability deserved.

Important meetings were not going his way. Decisions were not landing the way they should have been.

Let me tell you about a CEO who kept losing rooms he should have owned.
