At Chittar, we wanted to explore the complicated relationship South Asian women have with sports.

A relationship shaped by culture, community, opportunity, expectation - and sometimes, the lack of it.

We asked three women a simple question: “How did you feel about sports growing up?”

Their answers reveal how our experiences of movement, competition, and belonging are shaped long before we ever step onto a field.

For many girls, sport wasn’t just about the game. It was about being told to be careful. To take up less space. To look a certain way. To choose something else.

Too often, the barriers have little to do with talent - fewer opportunities, fewer role models, less encouragement, and expectations that shape who gets to play and who doesn’t.

This is the start of a conversation.
