Noisy toys could permanently damage the hearing of toddlers as they can be as loud as a chainsaw, a new report has warned.
Researchers from the University of California, Irvine's, Department of Otolaryngology measured the noise levels of two dozen popular toys in stores and purchased the 10 loudest for precise gauging in a soundproof booth at UC Irvine Medical Center.
'Generally, toys are safe if used properly,' said Dr. Hamid Djalilian, associate professor of otolaryngology and director of neurotology and skull base surgery.
'Problems can arise if a noisy toy is held too close to the ears, he said:
'Children are very sensitive to loud and high-pitched sounds. Unfortunately, hearing loss from noise damage is permanent and not currently curable.'
According to the American Academy of Otolaryngology, unprotected exposure to sounds above 85 decibels for a prolonged period can lead to hearing impairment.
Two factors contribute to this, Dr Djalilian noted: loudness and duration.
The louder a sound is, the less time it takes to cause hearing loss. He suggested that someone buying a noisy toy for a child pay attention to the speaker's location - under the item is often better than on top.
Dr Djalilian also recommended that an adult hold the toy as a youngster would and listen to its sound. 'If it hurts your ears,' he said, 'then it's probably too loud for a child.'

Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) is a type of injury that can happen to anyone, and when it does, lives can be changed forever. When children get injured, not only does the risk for permanent disability is there, but the severity of the injury can increase substantially. The impact of TBI is much worse in developing countries like Pakistan.

Fortunately, most people who sustain a TBI including children will recover from the incident within a few days or weeks. Some mild brain injuries can heal with proper medical care. However, some brain injuries – even mild concussions – can lead to long-term damage.

Keeping children and teens healthy and safe is always a top priority.

Whether you are a parent, youth sports coach, high school coach, school professional, or health care provider, learn how can you recognize, respond to, and minimize the risk of concussion or other serious brain injury.

As you and your family prepare for fun-filled days of winter, keep in mind that hand washing is one of the best ways to avoid the spread of infections.

The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) and PPA recommends that kids 6 months of age and older get the flu vaccine every year. Children younger than 9 years old may need two doses of the vaccine to be protected. Discuss this with your child's pediatrician.

Remember: Although other illnesses can be a bit scary right now, it is much easier to catch to the flu or other respiratory viruses than it is to catch Ebola. In fact, based on statistics we have right now, it is likely that flu will cause far more illness and deaths around the globe than Ebola will.

Your baby's Taste and "Neophobia".
A baby has around 10,000 taste buds. Way more than an adult! They are not just on the tongue but also on the sides, back, and roof of the mouth. You can use this knowledge to your advantage when introducing solid foods to your baby.

You're standing in a supermarket. Lying at your feet is your toddler, who has just been denied (by you) that, no, she cannot have that particular toy she wants. Her face has turned a shade somewhere between red and purple. Her fists are pounding the floor in fury as she emits a shriek that can be heard in the farthest reaches of the parking lot. The other shoppers are gaping at this spectacle as you wish desperately for a hole to open in the floor and swallow you up.......

Bedtime Bottles
Despite being an effective tool to lull your baby to sleep, bottles of milk at bedtime increase the risk of early dental decay in your baby's mouth. Prolonged exposure of the sugar in milk works with mouth bacteria to break down tooth enamel and results in rampant decay. There's even a name for it: Baby Bottle Tooth Decay. Find alternative methods to help your baby sleep before bedtime or use water in the bottle instead.

Parents often fail to recognize their children's weight gain as a health concern, says a study.
Parents of obese children often do not recognize the potentially serious health consequences of childhood weight gain or the importance of daily physical activity in helping their child reach a healthy weight, the findings showed.

"Parents have a hard time changing their child's dietary and physical activity behaviors," said lead author Kyung Rhee, an assistant adjunct professor at University of California, San Diego School of Medicine in the US.

The study is based on a survey of 202 parents whose children were enrolled in an obesity clinic at the Hasbro Children's Hospital in Providence, Rhode Island in 2008 and 2009.

Although most of the children had been referred to the obesity clinic by a primary care provider and had metabolic markers of obesity, 31.4 percent of parents perceived their child's health as excellent or very good and 28 percent did not perceive their child's weight as a health concern.

For years, mother’s have been told that newborns only see in black and white when they are born, but we now know that this is not the case. Newborns can see colour right away if the colours are bright.

Made of cartilage that develops into bone through ossification, baby knee caps don't show up on x-rays. Baby knee caps are very soft, flexible and actually pretty darn durable. With all of the crawling and the toddling that includes endlessly bumping them, baby's knees really are like little heavy duty shock absorbers. Ossification (cartilage hardening to bone) starts at about 3 years of age and continues until about age 6.
