I’m hoping that this is just the first of many new editions of Space To Roam. I feel like there are so many other incredible locations around the world that align perfectly with the ‘otherworldly’ theme. I sincerely hope that viewers of my project have a new sense of admiration and respect for the wonderful earth we live in and that they are inspired to help protect it.

Work is being down to try and help mitigate the situation. The Cheetah Conservation Fund is based in Namibia and is working to develop best practices that benefit the entire ecosystem upon which the cheetah depends. Their programs take a holistic approach to address the concerns of the wildlife populations and the human communities that share the landscape. An example of their strategies include the introduction of guard dogs for livestock and growing thorn-bush for use in the biomass industry. Thorn-bush helps to divide the cheetahs and the livestock, while also being used as fuel source. Throughout the contient, regional organisations are hard at work to save the cheetah such as Cheetah Outreach in South Africa fighting to save the country’s 500 freeranging cheetah, in Zimbabwe there is the Cheetah Conservation Project and Tanzania has the Serengeti Cheetah Project. Over in Asia, the Iranian Cheetah Society (ICS) hopes to conserve the country’s wild cheetah through community based education programmes that aim to reduce conflict with humans.

The most familiar insect house-hunters in autumn are ladybirds, especially when they settle around window frames by the dozen. While they are usually solitary, the beetles become more sociable and respond positively to the touch of fellow ladybirds in autumn. They will huddle up in large aggregations which increase their chances of surviving the winter. While various native species will be sheltering in leaf litter, harlequins (invasive ‘newcomers’ to the British Isles from Asia) are less cold-tolerant and attracted to light-coloured surfaces around human homes, thought to mimic the natural rock formations in their native lands. Once they find somewhere suitable for overwintering, they lay down chemical clues to invite more ladybirds to the same site.

The Réunion hotspot is thought to have been active for at least 66 million years, causing eruptions that relate to the extinction of the dinosaurs and more recently over the last 10 million years creating the Mascarene Islands, including Mauritius and Réunion.

It’s a rare geological setting when such large volcanoes grow from the seafloor to such great heights in the middle of tectonic plate - nature’s mightiest creating an island where plants can take hold and then animals start to find the island. As it grows weather systems form and rivers carve themselves through the young volcanic rock.
