There are several speakeasies throughout Buenos Aires, but my favorite is Florería Atlántico, located in a flower shop. Guests walk through what looks like a walk-in refrigerator door and head downstairs to this swanky bar with craft cocktails.

Predator Free 2050’s interium goal for 2025 includes the complete removal of all introduced predators from offshore island reserves and developing a scientific breakthrough to remove one of the target species completely. The Department for Conservation is basing this goal on the success they’ve had removing pests from smaller islands in New Zealand. In the 1960s, Maria Island become the first island in the world to be rat free. They have seen progress every decade since, breaking their own record in 2001 for the large island to be preadtor free when they cleared Campbell Island of rats.

One necessary resource that is scarce in the extreme, sun-drenched heat of arid environments such as deserts, is water. It’s integral to life, but some animals have developed adaptions to access moisture by using some pretty clever methods. Desert tortoises store water in their bladders which they can extract when dry conditions prevail, while the Australian water-holding frog holds water in its gills. Desert spadefoot toads bury themselves underground, wrapped in a mucus membrane to keep hydrated, while the African lungfish, that usually lives in shallow water, transforms into an air breathing land-dweller if the water dries up.

"And the house that the building is in, Newman House, was where John Henry Newman was," said Morash. "[He] was the founder of what was then the National University of Ireland. So, it has historical associations as well."

Last December, after living in Oaxaca City, the capital of the eponymous state, for five months, I finally made it this beautiful Pacific coastline to watch waves pummel Playa Zipolite, Mexico's only official n**e beach; admire the sun set on a sea cape that's said to be home to buried Aztec treasure; and try neo-shamanic healing in the bohemian town of Mazunte.
But getting there was no easy feat. Oaxaca's peaceful, fragile and largely undeveloped coast is sheltered by the Sierra Madre del Sur Mountains and was at that time reached by a famously vomit-inducing mountain road with endless hairpin turns from Oaxaca City. Taking seven to eight hours by car – or 10-12 hours by bus – the journey was hard to fit into my work schedule. My only other option was an expensive flight to coastal city Puerto Escondido. I went with a night bus, whose nonstop twists and turns left me feeling like I was riding an out-of-control rollercoaster.
