The Canadian government recently announced special measures in this vein, including opening and closing the snow crab fishing season earlier than usual this year. The traps used to catch snow crabs are often tethered to ropes linking them to buoys floating on the sea surface. That of course creates a long line through the water column in which a whale could get caught.

One idea is to use ropes adapted to break when a certain amount of pressure is exerted on them, explains Phil Hamilton, also at the New England Aquarium's Anderson Cabot Center.

“Basically they just cut the [rope] and they put these sleeves over either end that are designed to break at 1,700 lbs [of pressure],” he explains. “The sleeves are like a dollar apiece.”

“I was one of the first people to experience it being extinct in the wild,” says Cohn-Haft, an ornithologist at the National Institute of Amazonian Research.

That was 20 years ago. No verified wild specimens have been seen since. The Spix’s macaw was first described in 1638 and is named after the German naturalist, Johann Baptist Ritter von Spix, who collected a specimen in 1819. It’s small for a macaw, but has distinctive blue feathers, often fading to pale grey around the head. South America has many exotically coloured parrots, but the sophisticated blue plumage sets the Spix’s apart from many other species on the continent.

For years, Spix’s macaws were restricted to a small area of habitat in north-eastern Brazil. Deforestation in the 20th Century contributed to their decline.

The demand for beef accounts for 37% of all agricultural deforestation from 2001 to 201519 – and when forests are cleared, their biodiversity is lost, too. “A vegan diet is probably the single biggest way to reduce your impact on planet Earth,” says Joseph Poore, from the University of Oxford.20 According to his study published in the journal Science, it would mean a 75% reduction in farmland around the world, reducing the threat to biodiversity, while still producing enough food for everyone.
