Sara was nonetheless married in Warsaw on 14 January 1900. It was a marriage arranged by two Hasidic families. Her husband was an eighteen year old merchant from Mława, Mendel Lipszyc, the great-nephew of the wife of the tsaddik Icchak Meir Alter from Góra Kalwaria.
Sunia. That was what Sara was called by all those who loved her, and she has survived in family memory as Sunia to this day. Striking, intelligent and sensitive, she proved to be a gifted artist. Her parents were pleased with their daughter’s talent and had nothing against her developing it in the privacy of her home, presuming that after her marriage she would immerse herself in housekeeping and building a family. Her son Mendel Julian Lipszyc was born in Kraków in 1902.
In 1904, Sara appears on the list of students at the newly established Szkoła Sztuk Pięknych [School of Fine Arts] in Warsaw, under her husband’s name – Lipszyc. She features on the right of a photograph taken of the School's first intake, among a crowd of friends, looking straight at the camera over the others’ heads. On the left, where the lecturers are gathered, the sculptor Xawery Dunikowski – her destiny - gazes out glumly. It is their only known photograph together. On the reverse, there is an asterisk by Sara’s name and a note which reads: Professor K Dunikowski’s muse. A discreet observation, which encapsulates 70 years of love and suffering.
