➡ NERVOUS INFANT IN THE EVENING: WHY IT HAPPENS AND WHAT TO DO
Having a child is undoubtedly the most beautiful and fantastic event in one's life, which fills any couple with joy, giving indescribable and beautiful emotions. Still, it is also a vast and non-stop commitment, especially when you find yourself a nervous newborn in the evening to manage.
The days become much longer between breastfeeding, diapers, bath time, and colic, and the effort is endless. When evening arrives, exhausted, all we want is to see our baby fall asleep peacefully in his crib to relax, but often the newborn is nervous and restless and doesn't want to know how to calm down, and his screams make our mood worse.
Many mothers don't know how to behave and understand what is happening to their child: is it a tantrum, or does he feel some pain? Is he hungry, or does he need physical contact?
➡ WHY DO NEWBORNS UPSET?
Before continuing, I would like you to know that a newborn baby doesn't throw a tantrum. The term "caprice" should be eliminated from our vocabulary, but if we have to use it, let's avoid it with such young children.
Arm yourself with patience, and know that whatever the nature of the problem that afflicts him, you must keep calm. If it continues for a long time, do not hesitate to consult the pediatrician to find out if your child suffers from any ailment. Often they ask friends and relatives for advice, who suggest many remedies that don't work with their child.
In any case, do not expect the newborn to start sleeping through the night in the first few months; it is, in fact, from 9 to 12 months of life that the child begins to take the right rhythm and to let you sleep peacefully until the morning.
➡ HOW TO KNOW IF A NEWBORN IS NERVOUS?
In the meantime, let's analyze the leading causes of the baby's restlessness in the evening when we try to put him to sleep.
The primary motivations of a desperate screaming newborn are usually hunger or the need to be changed. The only way a child at that age has to express his needs is desperate crying, which is a natural request for loving and immediate care; hunger can come to him at any time, maybe he didn't eat enough during the last feed, or perhaps he wants some milk as a cuddle to fall asleep with a full tummy.
The need to be changed is a need that the baby feels from the first hours of life: the feeling of being wet or dirty makes him feel very uncomfortable, and don't worry, he will cry until he is cleaned and refreshed.
But it's not just hunger and the need for cleanliness that makes a newborn nervous and untractable; several other causes must be considered to find an effective solution as soon as possible.
The environment that surrounds him could cause him adverse reactions: too high volume of the TV or stereo, annoying noises or too loud voices, excessive heat or cold, could be a more than valid reason to shout one's disapproval.
➡ HOW TO MAKE A NEWBORN RELAX IN THE EVENING?
But even tensions in the family could have the power to agitate him: it is known that a mother transmits her state of mind to her child, and if the mother is serene and calm, the child will not experience any negative sensations; on the contrary, a nervous and agitated mother will make her child feel all the agitation inside.
This happens early in pregnancy and affects the baby's sleep patterns even after birth.
Changes are another cause of restlessness in newborns: if the baby is used to a specific routine, he will become agitated if this is suddenly changed. We also remind you that the child must not be too tired because feeling exhausted will upset him and certainly will not make him sleepy.
It seems trivial and, in some cases, absurd. Still, excessive tiredness does not allow the necessary relaxation to abandon oneself to sleep, an activity that requires total abandonment and, therefore, the most peaceful and safest situation possible.
In any case, once the newborn has been changed, his hunger has been soothed, and his possible reflux has been avoided (another incredible source of stress for the baby who continues to regurgitate acid and suffers), we need to create the ideal environment to prevent nervousness.
Soft lights, low volume sounds or noises, even better if there are no screens in the room. Of course, all seasoned with a serene family environment.
➡ HOW TO DO WITH AN AGITATED NEWBORN?
The most important thing to do when the newborn is nervous and restless in the evening is to satisfy his requests, whether to breastfeed or change his diaper.
Another thing to do as soon as possible is to get your child used to a routine that gives him serenity and balance from the first days at home.
Organize yourself with a fixed pattern to be respected every night: you can start with a bath, which will relax and prepare him for sleep; the baby food will follow, satisfying him and making him feel at ease.
After the meal, you can rock him with a sweet lullaby and gently place him in his cradle; your child will soon get used to this sequence of actions, calming him down and giving him security.
Newborns need to sleep a lot, from 15 to 20 hours a day, to grow and develop in the best way: rest favors their growth and brain development. Remember, however, that every child is different from the others and that his sleep could change from situation to situation.
Furthermore, the newborn needs to be put to bed when he is not too tired and always in the same place to avoid interrupting his habits.
The activities to be carried out with him before sleep must be calm and peaceful, and the child must not be excessively stimulated so as not to make him nervous: the company of mum and dad will reassure him, giving him that sense of protection and security which is essential for him, which they will help build self-confidence.
Cuddling, accompanied by a low-pitched lullaby with a sweet tone, is the best sleeping pill your child can receive, but a music box, carousel, or relaxing music can also help.
The carousels, specially designed to calm and relax the child through sweet sounds and colors, can distract the child from his agitation and accompany him to sleep, sometimes without him realizing it. They are straightforward to put on the crib or the cot and prove to be a magical remedy to calm down the desperate child.
Over time, the newborn adapts better to changes and separation from the parent, getting used to the events that happen in sequence before sleep and enjoying a deeper and more relaxed sleep.
In conclusion, do not be afraid to experiment with what will be the most effective remedy for you and your child to make your evenings and nights more serene and peaceful.
