A seat certified for a car is not certified for a ferry.

Every transport interior answers to its own fire regulation. Automotive to FMVSS302 and UN Reg. 118. Aviation to FAR 25.853. Marine to IMO 2010 FTP Part 8. Coach, rail and recreational vehicles bring their own. Which is why mobility projects so often end up sourcing a different fabric for every mode — different samples, different lead times, different warranty.

Tecidos que Unem. Fabrics that bring people together.

We swapped the factory floor for Parque da Cidade and spent a morning doing what teams do best: playing, competing, laughing, and eating well.

Team games, bingo with prizes, food and drinks, and a lunch to close it off in the best way.

Behind every roll of fabric we produce there are people who make it happen. This morning was for them.

A material can be industrial-ready, perform well and still not reach the market at scale.

That was the honest centre of “Delivering the Future”, the round table at the closing event of BioShoes4All, where Luísa Sousa, COO of Monteiro Ribas, joined the panel.

BioShoes4All is the largest project ever undertaken by the Portuguese footwear industry, funded by the PRR and Next Generation EU. Its final results made the gap visible: the barriers to adoption sit right across the value chain.

Luísa’s takeaway: Europe’s sustainability focus isn’t only a constraint. It’s a strategic opportunity, one that needs scale, collaboration, and a more integrated bioeconomy.

Textile or coated? In a busy contract space, that stopped being a design question.

Modern coated fabrics carry the texture, shading and depth of woven cloth. So the choice is no longer about how the seat looks on opening day — it’s about what happens after handover.

Three questions worth asking before the aesthetic one:

→ How often is this seat cleaned, and with what?
→ What fire class does the room actually need?
→ How many years until it’s reupholstered — and what does closing that space cost?

Woven textile still earns its place in quiet, dry, low-contact rooms. Coated fabric earns its place where seating is wiped down between users and has to hold a compliance requirement, season after season.

One season at sea is a stress test few fabrics survive.

UV glare off the water. Salt spray. Constant humidity. Chlorinated splashes from the pool. Plus a cleaning routine most fabrics can’t take.

The mistake that leads to an early refit? Assuming “marine-recommended” means fit for every zone. An interior saloon fabric and an exposed-deck fabric are not the same — it comes down to the base beneath the coating (polyester for wet zones, cotton for dry interiors) and IMO fire compliance throughout.
