I often hear: “These shoes are beautiful, but can’t you make them with velcro?”
When it comes to children’s footwear, many parents and educators lean toward velcro instead of laces. But here’s the real question: what do kids lose when everything is made only fast and convenient?

Durability and maintenance

Velcro: quick and easy to use, but the strap inevitably loses its grip over time. Once it weakens or fills with lint, the shoes become hard to wear and often need repairs. Sometimes, they even end up unusable while the rest of the shoe is still in perfect condition.

Laces: much more reliable long term. Worn-out or dirty laces can be replaced instantly and at very low cost. Plus, they can add a personal aesthetic touch—changing the color, texture, or style gives the shoes a whole new life.

Speed vs. patience

Velcro is the clear winner for speed: one pull and the child is ready to go. That’s why so many parents—and especially preschool or school teachers—prefer it, because it makes managing a group of children easier.

Laces, however, require time and focus. And that’s where the dilemma begins: should we really skip this exercise just because it’s more convenient for adults?

Skills and independence

Learning to tie shoelaces isn’t just a practical action. It builds:

fine motor skills (finger coordination),

sequential thinking (following clear steps to make the bow),

patience and perseverance,

a sense of independence and confidence (“I can do something difficult by myself”).

Sadly, more and more children reach older ages without knowing how to tie a bow, relying only on velcro. Isn’t this a sign of a “fast-forward” lifestyle, where even the small things that demand patience and attention are skipped?

Conclusion

Both laces and velcro have their place. Velcro works well for very young kids who need quick independence. But in the long run, laces bring something essential: life skills that go far beyond footwear.

Maybe it’s worth slowing down—and giving children the chance to learn something they’ll carry with them forever: the patience to tie their own shoes.
