To every artist who has felt the pain of seeing their creations copied - this is for you.
Today, I opened a platform and saw one our ex-photographers showcasing a knockoff of one of our dresses, using our tag to promote herself. Moments later, on Instagram, a well-known cosplayer was wearing another imitation. She looked stunning, and I might even have shared her photo if the ex*****on hadn’t been so flawed.
A few years back, a UK influencer consistently tagged our brand on posts featuring similar dresses from other designers. When we politely asked her to stop, she responded with mockery, belittling our ‘precious tag’. (and she continued using it). Later, she proudly posted photos wearing a Chinese knockoff of our Aurora Borealis design, promoting that brand with apparent delight in causing us emotional distress. We chose to block her and move on.
Every few days, someone alerts us to another stolen design - now they’re appearing from the US, Europe, and beyond. Most days, we suppress the sense of injustice, but some days - like today - it’s overwhelming. Scrolling through these shops, my heart sinks as I see our dresses, photos, and shoots misrepresented.
They even post fake reviews using photos of our clients to vouch for their ‘craftsmanship’.
To every artist who’s experienced this, especially fellow fantasy fashion designers and photographers whose work has been misused by AI, we stand with you. Human creativity is boundless, and the fantastical worlds we’ve built with our minds are ours alone. No one can take that away from us.
