On to the next one in the realm of Intwaro z’Umunyarwanda’s story — Chapter 3: Uruhago Rwa Gakondo, The Original Tote. The practical poet of ancient Rwanda.

Before denim. Before design sketches. Before the word fashion ever slipped into our vocabulary — there was Uruhago.

It carried everything: food for journeys, gifts for neighbors, secrets between lovers. Woven from banana stems, grass, or animal hide — simple, humble, and yet… timeless.

Generations later, we’ve reimagined it — same soul, new skin.
Uruhago rwa Gakondo is born from narrow strips of recycled denim, stitched together like fragments of memory. A tribute to hands that once wove banana fibers into quiet beauty, and those that now guide fabric under a sewing machine.

Each piece carries echoes of the past — not out of nostalgia, but out of respect. Because some things deserve to evolve, not vanish.
