This recently opened back up in West London. It’s a gem. The styling of the floor mannequins is always inspiring and they frequently have a wide range of great pieces in a wide range of sizes. You’ll find menswear and womenswear (including a designer rack), as well as shoes and accessories, and a well presented display of interiors (porcelain, vases, etc.) towards the back of the shop. My top pick for charity shops in Chiswick: Royal Trinity Hospice Charity Shop.

What not to do when starting your new slow fashion journey: throw away all your old stuff. A lot of people think you’ve gotta go cold turkey, when in fact...building a more sustainable closet should be a journey. And a fun one. I’ve got my fair share of old tops and dresses from fast fashion brands. I take care of them, repair them, and think of them when deciding if an item I’m about to buy will fit in with my current wardrobe. This dress was purchased using a gift card a family member bought to a shop I wouldn’t normally visit myself. It’s versatile, colorful, and I feel like myself in it. Create a checklist for yourself when it comes to buying new garments, and aim to tick the boxes each time.

I read an article years ago by a Swedish professor that toiled over the question of whether or not we could see fashion as art. While the answer was complicated, he argued that in seeing fashion and particular garments as something we admire as we would a painting or a sculpture, instead of something we simply buy or consume, we may be able to reduce the industry’s massive environmental impact. It’s stuck with me since then, and actually been a thought I dwell on when questioning whether or not to buy a garment. Can I simply appreciate it as a beautiful design instead? If you’re starting your journey into building a more sustainable wardrobe, perhaps asking yourself that same question will prove helpful. Having my wardrobe on display in my bedroom feels a bit like hanging a tapestry or a painting. Since I’ve curated it carefully, each tells a story I enjoy recalling when I glance that way. And to quote the hokey pokey, cuz it’s in my head approx 3/7 days a week...”that’s what it’s all about”.

It takes just four days for a CEO from one of the top five global fashion brands to earn what a Bangladeshi garment worker will earn in her lifetime, according to a new Oxfam report released this week.

The fashion industry has made some of the richest men on the planet, while relying on some of the world’s lowest-paid workers, around 80% of whom are women. Anju, one woman described in Oxfam’s report, makes just over $900 a year sewing clothes in Bangladesh. She often works 12 hour days, and has to skip meals because she doesn’t have the money to eat.

“The billionaire boom is not a sign of a thriving economy but a symptom of a failing economic system. The people who make our clothes, assemble our phones and grow our food are being exploited to ensure a steady supply of cheap goods, and swell the profits of corporations and billionaire investors.”

"At this stage, it seems that while faux fur is cruelty-free, it’s not eco-friendly and can still cause harm to marine life, fashion workers, and the environment."

Sure, acrylic isn’t sourced from animals. That doesn’t quite make it cruelty-free though
