Wearing my 990’s today and thought the rolls were worth showing. One of the things that can surprise someone with their first pair of shell cordovan shoes is how the leather starts to change once you actually wear it. Rather than finer creases normally associated with calf, shell tends to form these broader rolls around the areas where the shoe flexes.

They’re not something you’d wanna get rid of. If anything, this is when shell starts becoming more interesting. Every pair develops differently and eventually, your 990’s stop looking quite like anyone else’s.

Change the leather and the same loafer can take on a completely different character.

Suede gives the penny a softer more relaxed feel whereas Chromexcel adds a little more weight and character. On the full strap, calf keeps things clean and understated while shell cordovan brings a depth and lustre that’s unmistakably its own. Four different combinations and to be honest, even we would have a hard time picking just one.

If you’ve been looking at loafers for a while, chances are you’ve compared the penny and the full strap. Both share the same idea but wear very differently on feet.

The full strap is usually one of the first things people notice whereas the penny tends to blend into an outfit in the best possible way. Neither approach is right or wrong, it’s simply a question of which feels more like you.
