The main reason to take care of lung is to avoid respiratory diseases. Respiratory diseases called the top killer in the world. In the United States, about 4 million people are hospitalized each year for respiratory diseases, and about 30 million people have a chronic illness such as asthma or emphysema.
Ending up in the hospital is not the only danger of respiratory disease. People who get infections can have breathing problems and end up in the hospital. If they don't get treated, they can die.
If you don't take care of your lungs now, they may not work as well when you get older. As you age, your lungs lose some of their elasticity and become less able to expand and contract. You also produce less mucus than you did when you were younger, making it harder for your body to fight off infections.
