Speaking on the Workers' Party (WP) economic motion on Aug. 5, party MP Jamus Lim said, "If our SMEs are stifled because business or funding opportunities are crowded out by the big players, we will never discover our own homegrown, globally competitive unicorn."

He called for a "push rather than pull" strategy in supporting SMEs, where new businesses automatically and routinely receive information on available government support and are paired with seconded experts to build their R&D capabilities.

To help boost SME productivity, Lim proposed several measures, including capping annual rent increases to 3% to give businesses more time to adjust to rising costs, and reviewing the dependency ratio ceiling (DRC) for sectors such as F&B, where, he said, Singaporeans continue to shun open positions that are advertised at attractive wages.
