Pew Pew Patches was launched in Summer 2014 by Dawn Bey, a Singaporean based in Hong Kong. While studying fashion design in Savannah College of Art & Design, she met graphic designer Danny Kostianos, who works together with her to design each collection. Named after the sound of lasers, the brand hopes to bring back the fun and ‘collector-like’ nature of iron-on patches. A hot item in the ‘80s, ir
on-on patches would cover whole denim jackets and jeans. Each patch was like a collector’s item and it would say something about the wearer, like a tattoo on bodies. At Pew Pew Patches, the duo aims to create witty and cute patches to bring back the ‘ ’ spirit. Most patches available now are copies of famous cartoon characters like The Simpsons. The duo instead creates original artwork and often takes inspiration from the patches of the past and from daily life. The production runs in small quantities and once they are sold out, they are never reproduced again. They can be patched on anything from caps to t-shirts, jackets and bags, leaving the wearer to “Do-It-Yourself” their clothes.
