Side quests shenanigans at Portals Exhibition The Portals Experience! Disclaimer: I grew up on a steady diet of pulp fantasy where hidden worlds lurked behind every wardrobe, mirror or train station and magic swords were passed around like candy. Authors brought their worlds to life with every word and I lapped them all up. Traipsing with Belgarath, experiencing Raistlin Majere’s redemption, gasping at Ned Stark’s death, tracing Tokiens’ family trees, and feeling impossibly old with Druss the Legend... and forever marvelling at how Sir Terry Pratchett blends wordplay, prose, social commentary and fantasy into an impossibly delicious feast of words.
So for me, Portals Exhibition was a must visit. An exhibition focusing on fantasy art and worlds, it featured books, original art, and dioramas spanning the history of fantasy to popular tropes to modern fantasy like Tarzan to science fiction; space and beyond. Many of the aforementioned authors have their own spotlight and you could finally gaze longingly at original book cover paintings by greats such as Bob Eggleton.
More than anything, the exhibition is an expression of the love of fantasy. The curators have such a great love for the genre and it really shows. From how the journey was planned, to the experience of viewing the exhibits through your phone’s torchlight, to the staggering collection of fantasy novels, it was pure joy to experience it all.
