I made this sculpture when I was 15. It was inspired by Picasso’s depictions of mother and child. I loved the flowing lines, the quiet strength, the way two forms become one.

I didn’t realise I was sculpting something I’d one day understand — the weight and wonder of being a mother.

Life has a way of revealing the meaning in our own creations, years later, when we’re ready to see it.

I’m 50 now, with two children beginning to shape into the adults they’ll become. They don’t yet know what it is to be a parent… only the irritation of being told what to do. 😂 A beautiful innocence indeed.

One day, perhaps they’ll understand too.
