What makes an essential oil photosensitive?

While known for their bright, summery scents, citrus oils are among the most common essential oils that cause photosensitivity. That’s because compounds found in citrus oils—known as furanocoumarins—greatly increase UV sensitivity. And while most photosensitive oils are citrus, other oils can contain compounds or mixes of compounds that have the same effect as furanocoumarins, meaning they’re not sun-safe either. Always check the label before application to determine the oil’s photosensitivity.

When using essential oils internally, it’s important to regard them with as much precaution as any other supplement. Start with the lowest possible dose (one to two drops), and then increase the dose as needed.

At a certain point, taking a higher dose no longer adds benefits. If you take too much, it can even become harmful. It’s better to take a smaller dose, which can be repeated every four to six hours as needed.

There are some essential oils that are never safe for internal use. Arborvitae, Cedarwood, Cypress, Douglas Fir, Eucalyptus, Spikenard, White Fir, and Wintergreen essential oils should never be taken internally, in any amount.
